The Weakest Australia Squad? Decoding Australia Squad | India vs Australia ODI squad 2025
The India vs Australia ODI series is all set to start from October 19, 2025; a total of three matches will be played between both teams. But, with the excitement, there's a lot of talk about the Australian squad, as many experts call it the “Weakest Australian Squad”. So, we will see the strengths, weaknesses, and what it means for the India vs Australia ODI series.
In recent times, Australia has performed exceptionally in the bilateral series and ICC tournaments. They are the defending champions of the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup after they defeated India in the 2023 World Cup by six wickets at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, India. But why do people call it “weakest”? We will decode it in this article.
The last time both teams played an ODI match was in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 earlier this year. India defeated Australia by four wickets in the semi-finals and later lifted the trophy. However, Australia still has plenty of good players, but this new side looks pretty inexperienced.
The Batting Department:
The players like Travis Head, Mitchell Marsh, and Cameron Green are part of the squad, who are known for their aggressive batting and have the capability to single-handedly win games for their team. But the problem is with the inconsistent middle-order. With the presence of Glenn Maxwell and Marcus Stoinis, the Australian team had reliable options, and both players won lots of matches for the team.
But now they aren't part of the squad; therefore, all the workload went to Josh Inglis, Alex Carey, and Matthew Short. Except for Alex Carey, none of them have a consistent performance for the Australian team, but the main concern is the match finisher. Glenn Maxwell was the one who was leading the department, and lots of players came in his absence, but none of them could fill this gap.
The Bowling Department:
After Australian captain Pat Cummins was ruled out of the ODI series against India, they still had one of the lethal bowling units. Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, and Nathan Ellis will be leading the bowling department, and they troubled Indian batters a lot in the past. So, it's going to be a good contest between Indian batters and Australian Pacers.
Adam Zampa and Matthew Kuhernmann are the only spinners in the squad, but this duo has troubled the Indian batters in the last encounter. But if they get a little expensive, then there’s no regular spin bowling option. Travis Head is another option, but he can bowl only a few overs.
So, Australia is coming up with an inexperienced unit against the Indian experienced squad, including the comeback of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. So, it will be interesting to see how Australia is going to challenge the Indian Team and win this series 3-0.
Australia Squad for ODI Series against India:
Mitchell Marsh (Captain), Xavier Bartlett, Cooper Connolly, Ben Dwarshuis, Nathan Ellis, Cameron Green, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Matthew Kuhnemann, Mitchell Owen, Josh Philippe, Matthew Renshaw, Matthew Short, Mitchell Starc
