The TATA IPL 2023 will begin in the first week of March. The teams have almost checked all the boxes in the auction itself and have tried to fix all the flaws. But what are these bases which every T20 team tries to cover? What are the different roles involved in a T20 game? These are roles such as an opener, death bowler, and many more. Over the years we have seen some elite T20 teams, teams such as the Mumbai Indians of 2020, the Chennai Super Kings of 2011, and the England Cricket Team of the 2022 T20 World Cup. Here is a look at the different components that make a successful T20 team:

Explosive Opener is a must in TATA IPL 2023:

Each of us knows how effective an explosive opener can be! IMG SRC: ECB

An explosive opener is always required. We have always seen the teams that have an explosive opener, do very well. In 2020 for the Mumbai Indians, it was Quinton De Kock. In IPL 2022, it was Jos Butler for the Rajasthan Royals. The explosiveness means that the batter needs to optimize the powerplay as there are only 2 players of the opposition beyond the 30-yard circle. The Kolkata Knight Riders have experimented with Sunil Narine as a floating opener and it has also paid good dividends. Mumbai has Ishan Kishan as their explosive opener in the TATA IPL 2023.

Floating Middle-Order Batter:

A floating middle-orderer batter means a player like Ben Stokes or Ambati Rayudu. This player needs to have the technique to negotiate with the pace if early wickets fall down and also needs to have the strokes to score runs at the death. The Mumbai Indians of 2020 had Krunal Pandya and Hardik Pandya, the England Cricket Team of 2022 had Ben Stokes, and the Sunrisers Hyderabad of 2016 had Yuvraj Singh. Ben Stokes will play for the Chennai Super Kings in TATA IPL 2023.

Finisher and Pinch Hitter is a must in TATA IPL 2023:

The pinch hitter is used in cases when the run rate has to be increased. We have seen the Mumbai Indians send players like Kieron Pollard up the order at number 3 or at number 4 to increase the run rate. Another example of a pinch hitter can be Shimron Hetmyer from the Rajasthan Royals of 2022. The finisher on the other end has a well-defined job. The first finisher that the cricketing world saw was Michael Bevan from Australia. Over the years, the IPL has seen many great finishers like MSD, ABD, and Dre Russ. Kieron Pollard is one such example too. So, every successful T20 team needs to have a good finisher.

Leg Spinner:

Leg Spinners are back in business. Post the Murali and Shane Warne era there was a drought in leg spinners. But with the rise of Yuzi, Rashid, and Kuldeep, the art of leg-spin is back in the game. Every successful T20 team must have a leg spinner. The Australian cricket team of 2021 had Adam Zampa and England had Adil Rashid in 2022. The advantage of leg spinners is that they are an attacking option. They aren’t afraid of conceding runs, they are brave enough to go for wickets. So, even if Yuzi goes for 3 consecutive sixes, you are sure that the batter will be back in the pavilion by the end of the over!

Death Bowler and Powerplay Bowler in TATA IPL 2023:

The death overs and the powerplay overs are the most crucial overs of this format. The powerplay bowlers need to have a different set of attributes whereas the death bowlers need something different. The powerplay bowlers need seam, swing, line, and length. Bhuvneshwar Kumar of 2021 is the best example. In fact, in 2016, Bhuvi was doing both roles. For the death bowler, the skills include a set of variations and most importantly a precise yorker. A wide yorker, slower bouncer, off-cutters, and leg cutters will also be good options.
