The ICC T20 World Cup will see some of the best teams locking horns with each other to prove who is the best in the world. The success of a team somehow does depend on the captain of the team. We say a captain is only as good as his team, but there are a few exceptions. For example, Kapil Dev and his 1983 legends, MS Dhoni and the 2013 Champions Trophy Team, and Sourav Ganguly and the NatWest Trophy 2002 Team. Here is an in-depth look at the list of the captains at the ICC T20 World Cup:

Rohit Sharma will lead India at the ICC T20 World Cup:

India has one of the best captains statistically and also as a player. One knows what Rohit can do with the bat when it is his day. He can take the game away single-handedly. Rohit has to lead by example. He is a big-match player and knows how to deal with pressure situations. Not every day you get a player who has led an IPL team to 5 titles. He has a good idea of which bowlers will be his wicket-takers and which players are his crucial and marquee players. It will be great to see if he can take India all the way this time.

Babar Azam will lead Pakistan at the ICC T20 World Cup:

Babar Azam is an ideal leader for Pakistan. With that being said, he is having a tough patch with the bat. But the champion in Babar Azam cannot be tamed. He is bound to excel along with his team. Pakistan, if they sort their middle-order batting, are top contenders for the title. Babar is very well aware of his bowling changes. He knows which overs are to be bowled by Shaheen and which will be bowled by Haris Rauf.

Temba Bavuma will lead South Africa at the ICC T20 World Cup:

Temba Bavuma will be leading the Proteas. The Proteas however are not here to compete but win. They also have a potent team that can go all the way. Bavuma has two of the most experienced T20 players on his team in the form of Miller and Quinton De Kock. With them to his aid, he can take part in the war. Bavuma is a young captain as he took charge of the team only a few years earlier but it will be great to see what he has in store on the global stage.

Jos Butler will lead England at the ICC T20 World Cup:

Jos, the Boss, has taken charge of the England white-ball circuit after Eoin Morgan decided to walk away from the format. Butler also allows the English players to express themselves. He gives them their freedom. He has many strong and interesting personalities to manage on the pitch. Liam Livingstone and Ben Stokes can be true assets if they are managed well and this is exactly what Jos is trying to do. Jos also has a good lineup of bowlers. He has 3 left-arm bowlers to choose from.

Aaron Finch will lead Australia at the ICC T20 World Cup:

Aaron Finch, the one who recently announced his retirement from the ODI format will be leading the Kangaroos on the global stage. He has taken the Australian team to the victory of the T20 World Cup once in 2021. He will be keen on repeating history. We just need to have a look at the strong personalities that Finch has to manage.

David Warner, Steve Smith, Glenn Maxwell, Pat Cummins, and Mitchell Starc. Just imagine the pressure and workload of management on Finchy. All these are senior players who can take leadership roles themselves. However, the tough decision for Finch is going to be whether to back Mitchell Starc or not as he has been a bit off-color, off-late.

Kane Williamson:

Kane Williamson will lead the Black-Caps. He is the only captain from the 2019 ODI World Cup who will be leading the squad. All the other teams have changed leaders. This speaks volumes of the trust and belief that the NZC management has in Kane Willaimson. If Kane doesn’t struggle with the elbow, he can easily get the NZ team through to the semis. They played the final last time around and will be keen to get a hand on the trophy this time. The big decisions for Kane will be about the batting order.

Nicholas Pooran:

ICC T20 World Cup
IMG SRC: TOI

Pooran is a young captain with a young and free-spirited team. In the last World Cup, it was Polly who captained the men in maroon. But now it will be Pooran. Pooran is a person who holds a lot of respect in the Caribbean Cricket circuit. He has to figure out a batting position for himself. The best of Pooran comes out at number 4 but he currently has many top-order batters to play there. That will be a crucial decision for him. He also has to figure out who will bowl the death overs for the Windies.

Dasun Shanaka:

ICC T20 World Cup
IMG SRC: SLC.

Dasun Shanaka is one of the best leaders for Sri Lanka off-late. After playing a musical chair of captaincy for more than 3 years, Sri Lanka has finally settled down with Dasun as their flag-bearer. Shanaka leads by example. He doesn’t expect his batters to score big if he can’t do that. He is the most important player from Sri Lanka too. He adds the much-required balance to the team. He bowls in the powerplay and is a world-class finisher. All in all, Shanaka is a complete package.

Mohammad Nabi:

ICC T20 World Cup 2022
IMG SRC: Afghanistan Cricket

Afghanistan will bring their most experienced campaigner as their captain. Nabi is a leader in the true sense. He has decided to take all the crucial and crunching moments on himself. He has even ensured that all his players are comfortable with the dressing room environment. The results of this can be seen on the pitch. He bowls in the powerplay and plays the role of the finisher.

Shakib-Al Hasan Will Lead Bangladesh at the ICC T20 World Cup:

Bangladesh has chosen its most experienced campaigner just like Afghanistan. They have chosen their legend Shakib to lead the team. This does show a lack of leaders in the younger crop of players. Over the years we have seen senior players like Mahmadullah Riyad and Rahil take up the captaincy. But now it is about time fresher faces take it. But Shakib will certainly do justice to the role. He has to bat up the order at number 3 as that is his ideal position.
