Shubman Gill Ruled Out! India Captain Misses Rest of Kolkata Test After Neck Injury | IND vs SA 1st Test

A major setback for the Indian Team in the ongoing IND vs SA 1st Test at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata, as Captain Shubman Gill was ruled out of the remainder of the match due to a neck injury. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed the news on Sunday, just before the start of Day three.

This incident happened on Day 2 when Gill went for batting in India’s first inning but was able to face only three balls and left the field after having discomfort around his neck. Later, Team India's medical team took him to the local hospital for a detailed medical test, and now, he is out of the Kolkata Test.

With this, Shubman Gill is also doubtful for the India vs South Africa 2nd Test in Guwahati, which is scheduled to be played on November 22-26, 2025. Indian team management would not risk Gill for the second test as India has to play some of the important series and the T20 World Cup 2026 in the upcoming months.

What Happened to Shubman Gill?

According to BCCI’s statement, Shubman Gill suffered a neck spasm on the 2nd day of the India vs South Africa test match. After Day 2 stumps, Gill was taken to the hospital for scans and further medical examination.

BCCI said, “Captain Shubman Gill had a neck injury on Day 2 of the ongoing Test against South Africa in Kolkata. He will take no further part in the test match.”

Will Shubman Gill be fit for the 2nd test?

India will be playing the second test match against South Africa on November 22, 2025. At this moment, there are no clear updates on Gill’s availability; however, chances are high that Shubman Gill will play the 2nd test match.
