Indian batter Shreyas Iyer has been in the headlines for a while now. His back injury has put many under scrutiny as his selection in the upcoming games has been under jeopardy. The team management, NCA has received a lot of skewering for rushing players as Iyer already was nursing an injury before he made a comeback in the Test series against Australia. He suffered another injury during the series and there’s still no clarity about when he will return to action.

Shreyas Iyer complained of back pain during the recently concluded fourth Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against India in Ahmedabad. He immediately went for scans and was deemed unfit to take part in that game and was ruled out of the ODI series against Australia as well.

It was expected that Iyer would return for the IPL 2023 but that now seems quite difficult as his injury is much worse than expected. Recently many reports suggested that he will miss cricket for 3-6 months and not only the IPL but will also miss the World Test Championship Final.

However, there’s a twist to the whole saga as well as to be completely fit, the batter requires to undergo the surgery and it is learned that as per the reports in cricbuzz the batter has decided against the surgery as he’s keen to be part of the World Cup more than the IPL. Surgery will rule him out for at least 6-7 months, that’s why he doesn’t want to take a risk and will rest during the IPL.

The Cricket World Cup 2023 will take place in India later this year and it’s fair to say that Iyer will be a vital cog in India’s lineup. Of late, the batter has been the mainstay of the Indian batting in the middle order and has piled up a staggering amount of runs.

If the reports emerge to be true, then the batter might take a rest during the IPL and reports in the ESPNCricinfo have suggested that if not for the full season but the batter will miss at least the first half of the league. This will be a massive blow for the franchise as they will play without their main batter and skipper. Although no official confirmation has been made yet, but things aren’t looking good for the KKR skipper. The team will open their campaign against Punjab Kings on 2nd April whereas the league will begin from 31st March.
