SA20 2025: Two Times Champions Sunrisers are having Problematic Season, Check Full SA20 Points Table
SA20 2025: Sunrisers Eastern Cape finally found their footing in SA20 after three consecutive losses, claiming a commanding 58-run victory over Durban Super Giants at Kingsmead, Durban, on Friday, January 17.
The Sunrisers showcased a well-rounded performance with bat and ball to register their first win of the season. A solid batting effort, led by Tom Abell’s half-century and Marco Jansen’s late fireworks, set the foundation for a convincing result.
Sunrisers Eastern Cape vs Durban Super Giants Highlights
Electing to bat first on a slightly sluggish pitch, Sunrisers lost opener David Bedingham early to a sharp delivery from Naveen Ul Haq. However, Zak Crawley and Abell steadied the innings, crafting an important partnership. Crawley’s 38 off 29 balls provided momentum, while Abell anchored the innings with a composed 57 off 39 balls.
Just as Sunrisers seemed to take control, spinner Noor Ahmad dismantled their middle order, claiming four crucial wickets, including the dangerous Crawley and Aiden Markram. However, Marco Jansen’s unbeaten 36 off 26 balls in the final overs propelled the Sunrisers to a competitive total of 165/5.
The Durban Super Giants, chasing 166, stumbled early in their innings. Bryce Parsons was run out after a brilliant direct hit from Markram, and Kane Williamson, who had looked promising in earlier matches, fell cheaply to Liam Dawson. Dawson’s tight spell of 2-18 kept the pressure on, as Durban reached only 54/3 at the halfway mark. The early wickets derailed their chase, leaving them needing a monumental effort to recover.
Despite efforts from Quinton de Kock and Wiaan Mulder to rebuild, the increasing required run rate proved too much to handle. Richard Gleeson and Ottneil Baartman cleaned up the middle and lower order, ensuring Durban’s batters couldn’t find the late surge they needed.
Gleeson’s double strike in the 17th over and Baartman’s tidy finish in the 19th wrapped up the innings at just 107, handing Sunrisers a much-needed win.
This victory not only ended the Sunrisers’ losing streak but also showcased their ability to perform under pressure. With their batting and bowling units clicking together, they’ll look to build on this performance and regain momentum in the tournament.
