No Families, No Distractions: Why BCCI Has Kept Indian Players on a Tight Leash in T20 World Cup 2026?
Once Again, BCCI will not allow the Indian players to stay with their families during the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, as they did not during the last World Cup.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will once again not allow the Indian players to stay with their families during the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, as they did not during the last World Cup. Despite the requests from team management, BCCI has decided to continue this policy on a strict note so that players can focus more on their performance and game.
According to the reports, the Indian team management reportedly approached the BCCI to get clarity on whether the players' wives and fiancées could travel and stay with the squad during the T20 World Cup 2026. But the BCCI turned down the request and made it strictly clear that families are not allowed to stay with the players in the official hotel.
However, players are free to make their own individual arrangements, and they cannot stay with the team in the official hotel. As per BCCI’s current policy, families are allowed to stay with players for a maximum of 14 days, but only if the overseas tour is of more than 45 days. The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 doesn’t meet the current policy requirement, so families are not allowed.
How and when did this policy come?
This approach was introduced for the first time after India’s disappointing 1-3 defeat against Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. After the loss, BCCI reviewed the reports from team management, and it raised concerns over discipline and focus. As per some reports, during the Australia tour, some players missed internal meetings and planning sessions to spend time with their families.
Therefore, this issue came to light, and the BCCI made changes and strictly implemented this policy in January 2025 so that players can focus more on their game and performances. All this started during COVID-19, when players were allowed to be with their families for the entire overseas series due to bio-bubbles and mental health concerns.
