List of Hindu Cricketers to have played Cricket for Bangladesh Amid Recent Tensions with India

The Bangladeshi National Cricket Team got the status of International Cricket after a gap of 15 years post their seperation from Pakistan in the year 1971. They played their maiden One-Day International match versus fierce-rivals Pakistan in 1986 and since then, Hindu cricket players of Bangladesh have been facing discrimination. A cricketer named Ranjan Das was the first Hindu cricketer to represent the Bangladesh National Cricket Team in the year 2000 and he made his debut versus the India National Cricket Team.

Post his debut, Das changed his religion and accepted Islamisim, but despite changing his relgion, he never got a chance to play for Bangladesh again. In this article, we are going to talk about Bangladesh-based Hindu players who have reprsented the nation in International Cricket.

6 Hindu cricketers have played for Bangladesh

1. Litton Das

Litton Das, the captain of the Bangladesh team for the ICC T20 World Cup 2026, to be hosted by India and Sri Lanka, is a Bengali-Hindu who has long represented Bangladesh in all three formats. Liton, who has played over 50 Tests, 90 ODIs, and 100 T20 Internationals, married Debashree Biswas Sonchita in 2019.

2. Soumya Sarkar

Bangladeshi-Hindu opening batsman Soumya Sarkar has been a key figure for the Bangladesh National Cricket Team across all formats of the game. Soumya has led the Bangladeshi team over the line on a cosistent basis with his all-round skills proving to be crucial & he remains a vital part of the lineup. He  has participated in sixteen matches of the longest format of the game, 79 50-over games, and 87 Twenty-Twenty encounters.

3. Alok Kapali 

One of Bangladesh's earliest Hindu cricketers was Alok Kapali, born to a Hindu family. In his international career, he played 17 Tests, 69 ODIs, and 7 T20 Internationals for Bangladesh. A prolific all-rounder, he is also the first cricketer to take a hat-trick for Bangladesh in Test cricket. His only century of his career came in an ODI against India. Subsequently, Alok joined India's rebel cricket league, the ICL (Indian Cricket League), which led to his ban by the Bangladesh Cricket Board. He returned to the Bangladesh team in April 2011, but his international career ended just a few months later.

4. Tapash Baisya

Tapash Baisya represented Bangladesh in Tests and ODIs. Although he has never publicly spoken about his religious beliefs, his Hindu background has often been linked to his background. Tapash was a talented fast bowler for his team in the 2000s.

5. Dhiman Ghosh

Bangladesh wicketkeeper-batsman Dhiman Ghosh had a short career, playing 14 ODIs and just one T20 International, in which he performed poorly. 

6. Rony Talukdar

Born into a Hindu family in Narayanganj, Rony Talukdar has played just one ODI and 11 T20 Internationals for Bangladesh. Rony played his first ODI in 2023, while he made his T20 International debut seven years earlier, in 2015. Rony waited a long time for his turn in the team, but despite his impressive performances in domestic cricket, Tamim Iqbal was sometimes selected, and then another player was chosen. Rony, who played his last match for Bangladesh in 2023, remains active in domestic cricket.
