IPL is never short of entertainment and thrill for the viewers and the league’s ever-growing popularity is a testament to that. To add another layer of joy and excitement and to take the league a step forward, the concept of Impact Player has been introduced.

The Indian cricket board has already implemented the ‘Impact Player’ concept in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and received positive feedback from the coaches and players. Delhi’s all-rounder Hrithik Shokeen became the first impact player in the domestic tournament and helped his side clinch a 71-run massive victory against Manipur.

IPL 2023 ‘Impact Player’ Rule Explained:

As per the new rule, each IPL team will have to name four substitute players at the time of the toss, apart from naming the playing11. One of the four substitute players can be used by the teams during the match. The substitute player can replace a player who is named in the playing11 before the start of the 14th over in the innings.

The substitute player who will replace a member of playing11 will be called ‘Impact Player’ and will have all the power to bat or bowl his full quota of overs. The impact player will be entitled to play any role in the team.

However, teams can’t make substitutions after the 14th over in either of the innings. Also, the substitutions won’t come to use if the match gets reduced to 10 overs or less due to any unforeseen situations.

“With the ever-growing popularity of T20 cricket, it is imperative that we look at introducing new dimensions which will make this format more attractive and interesting not only for our viewers but also the participating teams from a strategic viewpoint,” the BCCI had said in a statement to the state units earlier this year.

“The BCCI would like to introduce the concept of ‘Impact Player’ wherein participating teams could replace one member of its playing XI during a T20 match based on the context of the game,” the statement said.
