IPL 2022 Mega Auction: The fourteenth edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) is underway and the cash-rich league has produced some of the nail-biting thrillers. Although due to the harsh situations posed by the deadly pandemic, fans are not included in the stadiums the governing body has not left a single stone unturned to make things exciting for the fans watching through the television or their mobile phones. However, most of the fans are already excited for the next season of the IPL, especially for the IPL 2022 mega auction. When Will IPL 2022 Mega Auction Take Place?

As of now, there are no such details out from the BCCI but most probably the IPL 2022 Mega Auction will be somewhere between December 2021 or January 2022.  The IPL usually starts in the window of March to May or this may get extended to the first week of June.

Will there be some new Franchises/ Teams in the IPL 2022?

Yes, two news teams will be added to the existing pool of eight franchises. BCCI had already clarified the development that the two new teams will be brought in. As per most of the news outlets, Ahmedabad city will get one franchise while Lucknow and Kanpur could be the second new franchise.

The tender documents for the inclusion of two new IPL franchises will be out in mid-August, confirmed BCCI recently.

The big corporate giants including Kolkata-based RP-Sanjiv Goenka Group, Hyderabad-based Aurobindo Pharma Ltd;  the Adani group headquartered in Ahmedabad;  and the Torrent Group have shown their interests in owning an IPL franchise.

BCCI has shortlisted six cities, among these 6 cities 2 franchises will finally add to the IPL Teams. These cities are Guwahati, Ranchi, Cuttack (from the East region), Ahmedabad (from the West), Lucknow (from the Central Zone) and Dharamsala (from North).

Update: new franchise bidding is likely to be held on October 17 just after 2 days after IPL 2021 final.

Once all the documentation process of the teams is done, the BCCI will induct the two new teams in mid-October.

New Rules for the IPL 2022 Mega Auction?

As of now, there is no official clarification on updates of the IPL 2022 Mega Auction, but it is expected that there could be some addition to the existing rules due to the inclusion of the two new franchises.

Retention and RTM card:

As per the new rules, only three players can be retained by a franchise. The four players can be – two Indian players and one overseas or one Indian player and two overseas players.

The board has also said that all the players barring the retained ones will be sold from the Auction table.

We will understand with an example of Mumbai Indians (MI). The franchise would want to retain Rohit Sharma (Captain), Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya and Kieron Pollard / Trent Boult. Barring all these fours players, all the other cricketers of Mumbai will go to the Auction table and after that, the bids will decide their new franchise.

Update: IPL franchises are allowed to retain 4 players, either it can be 3 Indians and 1 overseas or 2 Indians and 2 overseas for IPL 2022 ahead of the mega auction.

Total purse of each IPL Franchise:

The total purse value for each franchise could be raised in the upcoming IPL 2022 Mega Auction. In IPL 2021, Franchises could only spend INR 85 Crores on the players however BCCI should raise the cap this time.

The total purse value for each franchise has been increased to INR 90 Crores from INR 85 Crores. The board further said that the purse value will increase in the next two years. It will go INR 95 Crores in IPL 2023 and INR 100 Crores in IPL 2024.

IPL 2022 Window and Schedule Change:

The IPL 2022 schedule window will be increased due to the addition of the two new franchises. The total number of games will reach over 90 and it is not possible to conduct all these in the frame of March-May.

BCCI could implement the procedure which was used for the games in IPL 2011. Teams were divided into groups and all the teams first played inside the respective groups before playing with the teams of other groups.

Maximum players in each team: 

Till now each franchise in the IPL is allowed to acquire a maximum of 25 players and a minimum of 18 players (domestic and overseas included) however there could be an increase in the players.

IPL 2022 Auction: First Choice Retention Price:

No changes have been made to the salaries of retentions. The salary of the retained players will be – INR 15 Crores, INR 11 Crores and INR 7 Crores (if a franchise retains three cricketers). The structure will be INR 12.5 Crores and INR 8.5 Crores if two players are retained by a franchise and INR 12.5 Crores for only a single player retained.

MS Dhoni, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are the first choice retention of their respective franchises and are drawing INR 15 Crores each IPL season since 2018 while Virat Kohli draws INR 17 Crores.
