India under Gambhir: Here's how India have performed under head coach Gautam Gambhir so far

The year 2024 has seen many ups and downs for India in cricket. India started with a home series test win over England and went on to break the ICC trophy drought as they won the ICC T20 World Cup 2024. But they have also lost their first-ever home test series since 2012.

For the first time, they suffered a test series whitewash at home and also lost an ODI series in Sri Lanka. Apart from that, after winning four consecutive Border-Gavaskar Trophies, it looks like India might lose the ongoing BGT trophy, which will also end their hopes to qualify for the World Test Championship final 2023-25. So, what has changed between the first half of the year and the second half? The answer is the role of coach.

India had Rahul Dravid as coach until the T20 World Cup 2024. After him, Gautam Gambhir took over the Cup and had a mixed stint. Gambhir had a good record in the shortest format, but his presence in red-ball cricket has not helped India. Below we will talk about Gambhir's record as a head coach so far.

It has been very hard for Gautam Gambhir as head coach. Notably, before him, India had a winning streak of over a decade at home. They didn't lose a home series since 2012. Though Gambhir's stint began with a brilliant 2-0 cleansweep over Bangladesh but that was the only happiness he had as coach.

After that, India suffered a humiliating 0-3 whitewash at the hands of New Zealand, which hurt India's chances of making it to the WTC final. The captain-coach duo of Gambhir and Rohit Sharma became the first pair to lose a home test bilateral series by losing all games.

India did secure a win after that against Australia in Perth. But then, lost the day-night test in Adelaide. So far, under Gautam Gambhir, India have played seven tests, won two, and lost four.

There have not been many ODIs for India since Gautam Gambhir became the head coach. India only played a three-match ODI series in Sri Lanka, which they lost 2-0, as one game was tied. Gambhir started his coaching stint with a series defeat in ODIs.

The shortest format is one format that has seen India doing well under Gambhir. And why not? The BCCI appointed Gambhir as head coach after helping KKR to win the IPL 2024, and he has done pretty well in T20Is.

It started with a 3-0 win in Sri Lanka just after Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Ravindra Jadeja retired from T20Is. India then won the T20I series against Bangladesh at home and beat South Africa 3-1 in South Africa. Though VVS Laxman was the interim coach in South Africa but technically, it will be counted under Gambhir.
