India took a 1-0 lead in the three-match ODI series against New Zealand after their sensational performance in the opening game. The Shubman Gill-led side beat the Black Caps by four wickets at the BCA Stadium, Kotambi, Vadodara on Sunday.

New Zealand, who were asked to bat, had a great opening partnership that put India under pressure. Devon Conway (56 and Henry Nicholls (62) batted brilliantly and made full use of the power play. The Conway-Nicholls duo added 117 runs for the opening partnership as Indian bowlers had no answers to their carnage.

Harshit Rana then brought India back in the game, removing both openers and then India pulled back the things brilliantly. They reduced the opposition to 198 and five and it seemed that they would wrap up New Zealand under 250. But Daryl Mitchell (84) held the fort for his team and played a magical innings. His knock along with Kristian Clarke's (24) late blitz took New Zealand to 300 for eight.

Rohit Sharma (26) took India off to a flying start with his brilliant power-hitting. But couldn’t carry on and it was then that captain Shubman Gill (56) and Virat Kohli (93) took charge. The master and apprentice took the game away from New Zealand with their half-centuries, adding 118 for the second wicket.

After Gill went back, Shreyas Iyer (49) joined Kohli as India cruised their way to the target with the Kohli-Iyer duo adding 77 for the third wicket. Just when it seemed India would win easily, Kyle Jamison brought New Zealand back as India faced a collapse and were left at 242 for five.

However, with the team under pressure, Harshit Rana (29) and KL Rahul (29*) held their nerves as India chased the target with four wickets in hand.
