ICC T20 World Cup 2024: Match number 17 of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 ended with Australia winning the intense encounter against Ashes rivals England by a big margin of 36 runs at the Kensington Oval Stadium of Georgetown, Barbados on 8th June. With this comfortable victory, Mitchell Marsh – led Australia secured their second win of the tournament and are currently sitting comfortably at the top of Group B with four points in two matches.

The Kangaroos were asked to bat first by England’s Jos Buttler and the Mitchell Marsh – led team accepted the invitation happily. The opening duo of David Warner and Travis Head decided to take the attack to the English bowling unit and made full use of the powerplay overs. They smashed boundaries with ease and completely dominated the batting powerplay.

Jofra Archer and Moeen Ali got rid of both the Aussie openers before the end of the powerplay but then captain Mitchell Marsh walked out to the crease at number three and played a quickfire knock of 35 runs in 25 balls and ensured the hard work of the opening batters didn’t go in vain.

The English seamers tried to control the run flow of the Australians but they weren’t able to pick up wickets at regular intervals. The Kangaroos scored more than 10 runs per over in the final five overs of their inning, with useful cameos from Marcus Stoinis and Glenn Maxwell, helping them to breach the 200 run mark.

Talking about England’s bowling, Chris Jordan took two wickets but proved to be costly while Liam Livingstone, Adil Rashid, Moeen Ali and Jofra Archer took one wicket each. The duo of Will Jacks and Mark Proved went wicketless.

England had to chase a target of 202 runs if they wanted to secure a victory and their openers, Jos Buttler (42 runs in 28 balls) and Phil Salt (37 runs in 23 balls) got England off to a strong start but following their dismissals, the middle order batters weren’t able to capitalize on the start provided by the openers and kept losing wickets in quick succession during the middle overs phase of their inning. In the end, they weren’t able to recover from a middle order collapse and they eventually lost the game by 36 runs.

Adam Zampa and Pat Cummins took two wickets each while the duo of Josh Hazlewood and Marcus Stoinis ended the game with one scalp next to their name. Glenn Maxwell and Mitchell Starc went wicketless.

This defeat against Australia is England’s second loss of the tournament and their journey of qualifying for the Super 8 stage has become difficult.

Earlier in the day, Netherlands and South Africa participated in match number 16 of ICC T20 World Cup 2024 and it was a low scoring thriller as the Proteas managed to triumph over the Dutch thanks to the heroics of David Miller.

At one stage of the match, the Aiden Markram – led team lost four wickets in the powerplay itself and they were struggling at 12-4 following the dismissal of Heinrich Klassen. However, the duo of Tristan Stubbs and David Miller steadied the sinking ship of the South Africans and took them to safety. They batted in a sensible manner and added 65 runs for the fifth wicket.

Bas De Leede broke the partnership as he sent Stubbs back to the pavilion in the 17th over of the South African inning while Logan Van Beek got rid of Marco Jansen but Killer Miller stood tall till the end and helped his side get over the line.

The Netherlands bowled exceptionally well and took the game till the end as they took full advantage of the support the surface gave to their bowlers but as the game progressed, the assistance of the surface went away and the Dutch bowlers struggled to pick up wickets. The extras didn’t help their cause either but it was a wholehearted display from the European team.

Following their victory against the Netherlands, South Africa have moved to the top of Group D with four points in two matches while Bangladesh have occupied the second position after defeating Sri Lanka. Netherlands have dropped down to the third rank due to a higher Net Run Rate and the Sri Lankans are sitting at the bottom of Group D with 0 wins in two matches.
