Handshake Drama in Women’s World Cup! Harmanpreet Kaur refuses to shake hands with Pakistan’s Fatima Sana at toss
The Excitement of an India vs Pakistan Cricket Match reached a new high during the ICC Women’s ODI World Cup 2025. At the toss in Colombo, Indian Captain Harmanpreet Kaur and Pakistan skipper Fatima Sana made news by skipping the usual handshake, continuing a remarkable trend that began with the men’s teams at the Asia Cup 2025.
India Women’s National Cricket Team is playing their second game of ICC Women’s ODI World Cup 2025 against the arch-rivals Pakistan Women’s National Cricket Team at R. Premadasa Cricket Stadium in Colombo. However, the Indian team won their first game of the tournament against Sri Lanka, whereas Pakistan lost their first match against Bangladesh.
What Happened at the Toss?
Before every international cricket match, team captains shake hands at the toss as a good gesture and sportsmanship. But during the India vs Pakistan women’s group stage encounter, both Harmanpreet Kaur and Fatima Sana stood apart and did not shake hands or exchange team sheets.
This “no handshake” policy mimics recent matches between the Indian and Pakistani men’s teams, where Suryakumar Yadav and Salman Ali Agha also avoided handshakes across all their Asia Cup matches.
However, It needs to be mentioned here that the match between both teams is more than just a game, it’s often seen as a reflection of the country's political relationship. A lot of Pakistani cricketers have been seen making political gestures during the game, which later impacts the relationship between both teams.
BCCI officials also claimed that all “normal cricket protocols” would be followed around the match, but would not commit to customary handshakes or similar exchanges.
