Eden Gardens Pitch Rated ‘Satisfactory’ by ICC, Contradicting Gautam Gambhir’s Criticism

The International Cricket Council’s decision to rate the Eden Gardens pitch as “satisfactory” has added an interesting twist to the debate that followed India’s shocking Test defeat against South Africa in Kolkata. The match, which ended inside three days, sparked intense discussion around pitch preparation, especially after India failed to chase a modest target of 124.

India head coach Gautam Gambhir publicly stood by the surface, insisting it was exactly what the team had asked for and shielding the curators from blame. However, batting coach Sitanshu Kotak later offered a more nuanced view, admitting that the pitch deteriorated far quicker than anticipated. According to Kotak, excessive dryness and uneven bounce emerged as early as the second day, something India usually tries to avoid while aiming for balanced 5-day Test wickets.

The pitch did assist spinners heavily, as reflected in South African off-spinner Simon Harmer’s match-winning eight-wicket haul. Yet, India’s own spinners failed to extract a similar advantage, exposing flaws in execution rather than preparation alone. Former captain Sourav Ganguly was blunt in his assessment, questioning the need for overly spin-friendly tracks when India already possess a world-class bowling attack capable of thriving on sporting surfaces.

While Gambhir took responsibility in public to protect the support staff, Kotak clarified that no one intentionally wanted a pitch that broke down so early. Ultimately, he stressed that conditions were not the sole reason behind India’s defeat.

The contrast became clearer in Guwahati, where a better pitch produced a full five-day contest. Even so, India lost again, sealing a 0–2 series defeat. The ICC’s rating now underlines a simple truth: the Eden Gardens pitch may have been challenging, but it was not deemed unacceptable, and India’s struggles went deeper than the surface beneath their feet.
