CSK appoint Faf du Plessis as captain: Avid cricket fans must know that Indian Premier League franchise Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have recently bought a franchise in South Africa’s T20 League (CSA T20 League) and 2022 will be their debut season in the league. They have named the team as Jo’Burg Super Kings which is going to be the team for the South African capital city of Johannesburg.
We all know the massive fan following that CSK has across the globe and thus the hype regarding their new team in CSA T20 League has been huge as well. CSK fans will tend to follow Jo’Burg Super Kings as well and that, in turn, will increase the following of the tournament in general. Thus, CSK buying a team in CSA T20 League is a good thing for Cricket South Africa.
However, for the viewership to increase further and for the fans to take the competition seriously, it is important that the teams bring in some top players from across the globe and CSK has started to do that already.
Faf du Plessis to be named Joburg Super Kings’ captain
Earlier this week, we got to know that Stephen Fleming will be managing Joburg Super Kings. Now sources are saying that CSK has appointed Faf du Plessis as the captain of their new team in the CSA T20 League.
This is indeed big news. Faf du Plessis will be the perfect fit as Joburg Super Kings’ captain as he was not only an integral part of Chennai Super Kings in the past but also was one of South Africa’s most successful captains. Faf du Plessis joined Royal Challengers Bangalore as their captain just last season after CSK decided not to retain him. He will now make a return in the franchise not in the IPL but in CSA T20 League. So in a way, he is back with the Super Kings.
Apart from CSK, Mumbai Indians have also bought a franchise in the CSA T20 League. Their team will be called MI Cape Town. The MI vs CSK rivalry will thus continue beyond the boundaries of India in South Africa.
