International Cricket Council (ICC) on Tuesday (23rd January) announced the ODI Team of the Year 2023. Indian captain  Rohit Sharma has named a skipper of the team, which features 6 Indians, two Australians, two South Africans and one Kiwi player. 

Rohit Sharma has been slotted as an opener by ICC in the ODI Team of the Year 2023. The Indian captain was at his absolute best in format last year as he amassed 1255 runs at an average of 52. His aggressive intent at the top was the highlight of his ODI outings. 

Rohit’s opening partner Shubman Gill too has made a cut into the ODI Team of the Year 2023. The young batter was the leading run-better in the 50-over format and was one of the main reasons behind India’s success. He scored 1584 runs in 2023, that also included a double ton as well. 

Explosive Australian opener Travis Head who was wrecker in chief behind the team’s ICC World Cup 2023 win, also has been included in the ODI Team of the Year 2023. The batter was at his monstrous best in the 50-over format, especially during World Cup 2023. 

At No.4, Virat Kohli is the perfect fit. The batter was at his peak in 2023 as he mustered 1377 runs during the calendar year. He scored a record-breaking 765 runs in the ICC World Cup 2023 and also broke Sachin Tendulkar’s record for most ODI centuries. 

New Zealand start Daryl Mitchell acquires the No.5 spot in the ICC ODI Team of the Year 2023. The all-rounder amassed 1204 runs at an average of 52.34 to go with five centuries as well. The South African duo of Heinrich Klaasen and Marco Jansen are next.

While Klaasen made it into the ODI Team of the Year 2023 for his run in World Cup 2023, Jansen with his all-rounder skills surpassed many to make cut into the team. Australian spinner Adam Zampa picked 38 wickets at a decent average of 26 and forced his way into the ICC side. 

The Indian bowling trio of Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Siraj and Mohammed Shami are the last three entrants in the ICC ODI Team of the Year 2023. The leg-spinner was the leading wicket-taker in the ODIs in 2023 with 49 scalps to his name whereas Siraj gobbled 44 balls wickets. 

Mohammed Shami because of his impressive outing in ICC World Cup 2023 staked his claim in the ODI Team of the year 2023. He was the leading wicket-taker in the tournament with 24 scalps to his name. He picked four five-wicket hauls with the best of 7/57, which came against New Zealand in the final.
