Asia Cup 2025: Big Blow! Shubman Gill unwell after being named the Indian T20I vice-captain, likely to miss this massive tournament

In what has been the latest development, as per the reports in Cricbuzz, it is learned that Indian Test skipper Shubman Gill is unwell. This comes days after he was announced as the vice-captain of the Indian T20I for the upcoming Asia Cup 2025. 

The reports claimed that Shubman Gill is currently resting at his home in Chandigarh. The medical team recently visited him and sent a report to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), stating that he is unwell. 

Because of that, Shubman Gill won't be playing the Duleep Trophy 2025. The premier batter was appointed as the skipper of North Zone for the tournament, which will begin on 28th August. The batter was expected to play the first game, but that is unlikely now. 

After that first game, Shubman Gill was expected to leave for Dubai to play the Asia Cup 2025. However, now he will be getting rest before the tournament. He will be crucial for his team in the continental tournament, which will begin on 9th September in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). 

In place of Shubman Gill, the North Zone selectors have added Shubham Rohilla to the team. Vice-captain Ankit Kumar will now be leading the side in the tournament. This means that he will play red-ball cricket next during the series against the West Indies. 

Shubman Gill appointed as the vice-captain of the India team for the Asia Cup 2025 

Shubman Gill was recently appointed as the vice-captain of the Indian Cricket Team in the Asia Cup 2025. The batter, who last played in the T20I format in 2023, made a return to the side, hinting that he is in the leadership group going ahead. 

There were some reports which claimed that Gautam Gambhir wants to groom Shubman Gill even in the T20I as a skipper. The batter was recently appointed as the captain of the side in the longest format of the game. 

Gill lived up to the expectations as the leader, as he led from the front. The premier batter slammed 754 runs in the five-match series. He also hit four centuries, hitting one double ton as well. Under his leadership, the team drew the series in England by a margin of 2-2, winning at Edgbaston and The Oval.
