All Trades in the history of the IPL: 2009-2025

IPL has witnessed several big player trades in the form of Cameron Green, Hardik Pandya, Lockie Ferguson, Shikhar Dhawan and Harshal Patel. Several of these trades have occurred since 2009 with an all-cash deal, while some have been interesting player swaps. While some deals have been beneficial, some have cost them big time.

The IPL auction often grabs headlines for its record bids and dramatic moments, but the IPL trade window is a section that operates smoothly and without much hype. The trade window typically precedes the mini-auction, allowing franchises to target a player who would be crucial to their side.

In the pre-season of the IPL 2026, 15th November has been set as the date for the announcement of the retention of players. The likes of Chennai Super Kings, Rajasthan Royals, Kolkata Knight Riders and Delhi Capitals have emerged as the major teams ready for the trading window.

The IPL trade window starts just 7 days after the end of an IPL season and continues until a week before the IPL auction begins, and for 2025, it has been slotted between the 13th and the 15th of December. The trades can be of three types: Player Swaps without any money, all-cash deals and lastly Trade + Transfer Fee.

Top 5 Most Expensive Trades in IPL History:

Cameron Green [INR 17.5 Crores]

The big Australian all-rounder who scored a flurry of runs in his debut season for the Mumbai Indians was part of a trade deal with the Royal Challengers Bangalore. The trade included a huge INR 17.5 Crores cash deal, as the MI team wanted to trade in their former all-rounder Hardik Pandya, who moved from the Gujarat Titans to the Mumbai Indians.

Cameron Green played the next season for the Royal Challengers Bangalore, also giving a strong performance. Moreover, Green has emerged as a major trade option this season as well.

Hardik Pandya [INR 15 Crores]

Hardik Pandya, the Mumbai Indians all-rounder and their current skipper, is second on this list after she moved back to the team he started his IPL journey with. Pandya was bought for a massive INR 15 Crores, which also led to the release of Cameron Green.

Shardul Thakur [INR 10.75 Crores]

Shardul Thakur, the star cricketer from the CSK, went on to move to the Delhi Capitals. The Capitals, after a season, traded the Indian bowling all-rounder to the Kolkata Knight Riders, where he played a special role in pressure situations. The deal remains the third highest trade with a whopping sum of INR 10.75 Crores.

Avesh Khan [INR 10 Crores]

The Lucknow Super Giants' pace bowling sensation moved from the LSG to the Rajasthan Royals during the second season after LSG's debut in the IPL. The trade deal was marked at INR 10 Crores. However, later in the 2025 mega-auction, LSG bought back their old and experienced hat.

Lockie Ferguson [INR 10 Crores]

When KKR signed Shardul Thakur from the Capitals side, the Knights also traded in the New Zealand veteran pacer Lockie Ferguson. This remains the third costliest trade in the history of the league, with an INR 10 Crores deal between the Gujarat Titans and the Kolkata Knight Riders.
