ICC Test Rankings August 2025: Post-England Series Shake-Up and India's WTC Implications

The thrilling Test series between England and India in July 2025 is still in progress, with only the final match remaining at The Oval. 

Despite not being concluded, the series has already caused important shifts in the ICC Test Rankings. It also holds major implications for India's standing in the current World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 cycle.

Series Progress and Ranking Changes

The series has been a fiercely contested battle. Currently, England leads the five-match series 2-1, with one match ending in a draw. The drawn 4th Test at Old Trafford was a key moment, as India showed great resilience to prevent England from taking a larger series lead.

These match results directly affect the ICC Test Team Rankings. Australia remains at the top. England, with their victories, has strengthened its position. India, despite some strong individual performances, will need a win in the last Test to significantly improve its ranking.

Individual Player Movements

The series has also caused changes in the individual player rankings. Joe Root and Jasprit Bumrah continue to be among the top players in batting and bowling, respectively. 

Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar's crucial hundreds in the Old Trafford draw will likely improve their rankings, especially as all-rounders. Rishabh Pant also saw his rating go up earlier in the series.

World Test Championship (WTC) Implications

The 2025-27 World Test Championship cycle started in June 2025. The England vs. India series is an early and important part of this new cycle. Teams get 12 points for a win, 6 for a tie, and 4 for a draw. Points are deducted for slow over-rates. Teams are ranked by their points percentage (PCT).

India, with one win and one draw so far, has earned 16 points. Their PCT is currently 33.33%. England, with two wins and one draw, and a two-point penalty for a slow over-rate in the Lord's Test, has 26 points, with a PCT of 54.17%. This shows how every point matters in the WTC.

A strong performance in the upcoming final Test at The Oval is very important for India. It will help them improve their PCT and stay competitive in the race to finish in the top two for the WTC Final in 2027.
