Zimbabwe Progresses to Super Eight; Australia Crashes Out of T20 World Cup 2026 as IRE vs ZIM gets washed out
Australia will not be participating in the 2026 edition of the Men's T20 World Cup anymore. The rain-soaked match between Ireland and Zimbabwe in Pallekele on Tuesday put the reigning champions' ambitions of qualifying for the super eight phase in jeopardy. They were in shock after losing to the hosts, Sri Lanka, by a margin of eight wickets earlier on Monday night and this defeat was also their second back-to-back in the tournament after losing to Zimbabwe earlier.
The Kangaroos would still have had a chance to get to the Super 8 if Ireland had won this game against Zimbabwe. But when the two sides shared one point apiece due to the contest getting abandoned due to rain, the aspirations of the Kangaroos of qualifying further in the 2026 T20 World Cup were crushed.
Australia saw such a day after 17 years
After 17 years, Australia had such a day when they were ousted in the first round of the T20 World Cup. Australia has already lost in the 2009 group stage. In the last three T20 World Cups, the team has not done well. Australia was kicked out of the Super 12s in 2022. They made it to the Super 8s in 2024, and their adventure came to a stop at the group stage in 2026. It's important to remember that Australia won the T20 World Cup in 2021, but their results have been deteriorating ever then
Zimbabwe will now face Sri Lanka
Zimbabwe has performed incredibly well in the competition thus far, and they will now play Sri Lanka in the super eight. Their three fast bowlers, Richard Ngarava, Blessing Muzarabani, and Brad Evans, each took three wickets to dismiss Oman for just 103 runs in their first match in Colombo. Led by Brian Bennett (48 not out), their batsmen needed only 13.3 overs to secure an eight-wicket win.
Zimbabwe then scored 169 for two against Australia and then bowled out the Aussies for just 146. Opener Bennett once again starred with the bat, scoring an unbeaten 64, while Muzarabani and Evans bowled well, taking four and three wickets respectively. Zimbabwe will play their last group match against Sri Lanka in Colombo on February 19.
