What Bangladesh’s Refusal to Play in India Means for the 2026 T20 World Cup? Will the ICC relocate their matches?

The 2026 edition of the ICC Men's 20-20 Cricket World Cup has been thrown into disarray after the Cricket governing body of Bangladesh, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) released an official announcement in which they stated that their 15-member squad, led by Litton Das will not be allowed to travel to India for this year's mega event, which is slated to be played between 7th of February to 8th of March.

A day after India's Cricket Governing Body - the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) revealed that they had instructed three-time IPL winners Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to release left arm pacer Mustafizur Rahman from their squad for the 2026 edition of the IPL, the BCB came to this decision. The 30-year-old seamer was signed by the Kolkata-based team for a price tag of nine crore Indian rupees in the mini auction this year.

BCB said in a statement that they wanted the world cup games to be held outside of India because they are worried about the safety of its players there.

What will happen if the ICC agrees to the demands of Bangladesh to shift their cricket world cup matches outside India?

Scenario number one - The matches of the Bangladesh National Cricket Team could be shifted to Sri Lanka from India. This will be in compliance with the policy of hosting Pakistan National Cricket Team's Cricket World Cup matches in Sri Lanka - agreed by India & Sri Lanka. In accordance to the agreement, the Rohit Sharma-led outfit didn't travel to Pakistani soil for playing the matches of the 2025 edition of the ICC Champions Trophy while the Shaheens are playing their world cup games on Sri Lankan soil, a similar strategy which they followed in the 2025 edition of the ICC Women's 50-over World Cup. This exact strategy followed by Pakistan is what Bangladesh have demanded from the ICC for the forthcoming T20 World Cup.

Scenario number two - If Bangladesh's demand of shifting their matches outside India is not approved and they decide to forfeit from the tournament, then they will be replaced by some other team and that team will take the spot of Bangladesh in the World Cup. A similar situation has occured in the past when the Australia National Cricket Team refused to play their matches of the ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup 2016 on Bangladeshi soil and their spot was taken by Ireland. As of now, no conclusive decision has been taken regarding which team will replace the Litton Das-led side if a scenario like this happens.

Scenario number three - The Litton Das-led outfit could be forced to forfeit all their games scheduled to be played in India and this would result in a massive point loss for them. The Cricket World is not a stranger to this scenario as this has happened during the ODI World Cup of 1996 when the Windies and the Mighty Australians refused to travel to Sri Lanka to take part in their matches versus them.
