Truth Behind Russell’s Retirement - Why Shah Rukh Khan Asked Russell to Consider Retirement?
After a few days of release, Andre Russell announced his retirement from the Indian Premier League. However, KKR offered the role of “Power Coach” to Russell for the upcoming IPL 2026 season.
Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) took a massive decision of releasing Andre Russell ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 Auction, and this shocked everyone as Russell is one of the key faces of the franchise in this league. After a few days of release, Andre Russell announced his retirement from the Indian Premier League.
As per the media reports, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) CEO Venky Mysore and other key management people, including Shah Rukh Khan, told Andre Russell to retire, and he himself agreed over this decision. KKR also offered the role of “Power Coach” to Russell for the upcoming IPL season.
Why did KKR release Andre Russell?
KKR CEO Venky Mysore explained that the decision was not purely based on his performance, but was driven by the IPL Auction rule. Russell was retained for Rs. 12 crore in the last season, and if KKR retains him again for the upcoming season, the franchise would lose Rs. 18 crore from its auction purse.
It was a strategic move from the Kolkata Knight Riders as releasing Andre Rusell led KKR to have the highest purse of Rs. 64.3 crore for the upcoming IPL 2026 Auction. Mysore said, “It felt strange because Russell had never been sent back to the auction in 11 years. It was emotional for both sides.”
Shah Rukh Khan suggested “Power Coach” Role:
KKR CEO Venky Mysore discussed Russell's future with Shah Rukh Khan, and they decided to give Russell a new role to start a new chapter with the franchise. Mysore offered the role of “Power Coach” to Andre Russell as it matches his personality of power hitting and aggressive brand of cricket.
Interestingly, Russell loved the idea of “Power Coach”, and now, he will mentor KKR players on finishing games, explosive batting and power hitting. It is good news for the KKR fans as Russell is still part of the franchise, but now in a different role.
