According to a report by Hindustan Times, Shubman Gill, who is 25 years old, is all set to replace Rohit Sharma as Test captain. He recently held an hour-long meeting with Gautam Gambhir in Delhi, where plans were finalised.
Despite some influential people opposing him, Gill’s success in leading the Gujarat Titans, with multiple victories and 508 runs in IPL 2025, has impressed selectors.
The BCCI plans to announce Gill as captain along with the England squad. Gill has played 32 Test matches, scoring 1893 runs, making him a strong pick.
Ashwin’s Surprising Suggestion
Ravichandran Ashwin created a twist, going viral on social media by picking Ravindra Jadeja for Test captaincy. Ashwin called Jadeja the most experienced player at 36, capable of leading for two more years after Rohit and Kohli’s retirements.
He believes Jadeja’s 73 Test matches and all-around skills can guide the young squad. Ashwin also suggested Jasprit Bumrah for captaincy, but ruled him out due to injury concerns.
Gambhir’s Vision for Gill
The extended meeting Gautam Gambhir had with Shubman Gill in Delhi shows his hope, followed by a Mumbai visit on June 16.
As head coach, Gambhir wants a young leader for the 2025-27 World Test Championship cycle. He also met selector Ajit Agarkar to finalise the squad, sidelining Bumrah due to workload issues.
