Shikhar Dhawan has been a great servant of Indian Cricket. The southpaw has been one of the best openers to have played for the team. The dashing batter has piled up a huge amount of runs in all three formats for the team. But of late he has struggled to get going, which has been his downfall. With the youngster performing extremely well, his comeback in the side looks more so difficult. But with the kind of pedigree he possesses, one cannot write him off.

Indian opener Shikhar Dhawan has found himself on the sidelines of the team. While he was replaced by youngsters in the Test and T20Is since the last two years, ODI was the one format he had his eye in and was going great guns. The southpaw was the first-choice opener in the 50-over format and it was expected that he will open the innings in Cricket World Cup 2023.
But this wasn’t the case as his underwhelming performances in the ODIs saw him getting dropped. Not only did the runs dry up for him but he also didn’t cope up well with the strike rate, which led to his exclusion from the team.
In 2022, Dhawan scored 688 in 22 games at an average of 34.4 and a strike rate of 74.21 with a dot ball percentage of 60. His average in powerplay overs 1-10 was also underwhelming at 32.9 and his strike rate was just 66.9 last year.
Things got even worse for him in Bangladesh as he registered a series of low scores of 7,8 and 3 in the three matches, which potentially was the reason behind him getting dropped.

In his absence, young Shubman Gill has cemented his place in the team. He has scored runs consistently for the team at the top and has scored hundreds and double century as well for the team at the top to give them a rollicking start.
Recently in an interaction on Aj Tak, he was asked by a reporter if he was the chief selector now, whom be will pick: Dhawan or Gill. His reply won the hearts of many as he said that he will choose Gill as he is playing International cricket now, in good form so he will choose Gill over myself.

Shikhar Dhawan will next be seen in the action during the IPL 2023. He will captain Punjab Kings in this season. The southpaw was appointed as the leader after the auction and it’s fair to say that it’ll be an extremely important considering his place in the Indian side.
Dhawan notably has been a stalwart in the IPL and is the second-highest run-getter in the tournament with 6086 runs to his name. He will be extremely crucial to Punjab’s chances this year. He needs to lead from the if PBKS have to fancy their chances of winning the IPL title.
