Ravichandran Ashwin retires from Indian cricket, will be available for overseas leagues

Veteran Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has announced his retirement from the Indian Premier League (IPL) along with the Indian cricket team. He confirmed the development on his social media accounts, confirming that he will be available for overseas leagues. 

Ravichandran Ashwin, who retired from international cricket in December 2024, has been a legend of Indian cricket. The premier off-spinner made his presence felt in the IPL as well and ended as the fifth leading wicket-taker in the league. 

Ravichandran Ashwin has been sensational in the IPL over the years. The off-spinner made his debut in the league in 2009 and played a vital role in Chennai Super Kings (CSK) winning the titles in 2010 and 2011, and also ensured that teams won the Champions League title.

Taking to his Twitter account, Ravichandran Ashwin confirmed that he won't be featuring in the IPL. 

"Special day and hence a special beginning. They say every ending will have a new start, my time as an IPL cricketer comes to a close today, but my time as an explorer of the game around various leagues begins today. 

"Would like to thank all the franchisees for all the wonderful memories and relationships over the years and most importantly the @IPL and the @BCCI for what they have given me until now. Look forward to enjoying and making the most of what’s ahead of me"

Ravichandran Ashwin played for now-defunct Rising Pune Super Giants, followed by stints with the Punjab Kings (PBKS), Delhi Capitals (DC), and Rajasthan Royals (RR) in the league. He played a key role for all these teams with the bat as well as the ball. 

Ravichandran Ashwin played 221 games in the IPL and picked 187 wickets at an average of 30.23. His best figures are 4/34 as he had an economy of 7.20 in the league. Also, with the bat, he mustered 833 runs to go with one fifty.
