Indian batsman Shreyas Iyer has been included in Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy squad after the KKR skipper made himself available for selection for Mumbai’s upcoming Ranji Trophy semi-final against Tami Nadu. The semi-final is set to commence this Saturday at the Mumbai Cricket Association ground of the Bandra Kurla Complex in Mumbai.

Iyer, who was dropped from the Indian test team following his below par performances in the longest format of the game after the second test match against England, had skipped Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy Quarterfinal match against Baroda, citing back pain, but NCA’s head of Sports Science and Medicine, Nitin Patel, sent an email to the selectors and said that the KKR Skipper was completely fit and there were’no fresh injury reports’.

India’s spin bowling all-rounder Washington Sundar, who was also a part of the Men in Blue’s test squad against England, has been released from the squad and will be representing Tamil Nadu in the semi-final against Mumbai.

Shreyas Iyer’s inclusion in Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy squad comes after Jay Shah issued a warning to the A-team and the centrally contracted players that players who don’t participate in domestic cricket without a significant reason will have to face ‘ severe consequences’. This decision came on the back of Ishan Kishan’s non-participation in the Ranji Trophy for his state team Jharkhand after withdrawing from India’s test squad against South Africa, citing ‘Mental Fatigue’. The Mumbai Indians wicketkeeper batsman was then spotted training alongside newly appointed MI Skipper Hardik Pandya ahead of IPL 2024.

In the email sent by NCA’s head of sports science and medicine, Nitin Patel, he wrote, “He (Shreyas Iyer) was completely fit and available for selection according to the team report of the Indian team post the conclusion of the second test against England. He’s completely fit and injury-free, and there are no signs of any fresh injuries after he was released from the Indian test squad.”.

The national selectors, after taking input from the medical team of the BCCI, informed Shreyas to participate in the Ranji Trophy so that his back gets used to the strain of batting for long hours and staying on the field in the longest format of the game.

Mumbai’s updated Ranji Trophy squad for the semi-final against Tami Nadu:

Shreyas Iyer, Ajinkya Rahane (C), Amogh Bhatkal, Prithvi Shaw, Bhupen Lalwani, Prasad Pawar, Musheer Khan, Shardul Thakur, Hardik Tamore, Tanush Kotian, Shams Mulani, Tushar Deshpande, Aditya Dhumal, Royston Dias, Mohit Avasthi, and Dhawal Kulkarni.
