The stadium was built in the early 1950s under the supervision of Mr Abdul Rasheed Khan, and Mr Kafiluddin and It was officially inaugurated in 1955. the inaugural first match was played on this ground on 20-24 April 1955. This is one of the oldest stadiums in Pakistan, with a seating capacity of 34,228.
It has hosted several Test matches and is also known as the fortress of Pakistan Team. It is the debut ground for Sachin Tendulkar and Waqar Younis Khan. The inaugural ODI match on this ground was played on 21 November 1980. It has also hosted world cup matches in 1987 and 1996
