Major League Soccer club Inter Miami signs another Argentine player ahead of their start of the season. 29-year-old Central Defender Nicolas Freire signed for the Herons on Tuesday morning just hours after their loss to FC Dallas in an MLS pre-season friendly match.

Inter Miami bolstered its back line by signing the central defender from Mexican Club Pumas for the 2024 season. The team lost Kamal Miller earlier in a trade deal to the Portland Thorns and were in a search for a replacement.

“I’m proud to take this step in my career and play for a great club like Inter Miami. I’m looking forward to joining the group and dedicating myself to working hard here. This is an ambitious club that dreams big and I’m excited to help us compete for titles.” said Freire.

Inter Miami loans Nicolas Freire for the 2024 season

Nicolas Freire joins the Herons as a loan player for the upcoming season of MLS. Freire played the first half of the 2023-24 season on loan for Olympiacos of the Greek league and has now signed as a loan player for American side Inter Miami. Freire played the majority of his career for Argentine club Argentinos Juniors.

Freire is the sixth Argentine player in the squad of Inter Miami alongside Lionel Messi, Tomas Aviles, Facundo Farias, Nicolas Stefanelli, and Franco Negri. Farias, who recently suffered an ACL injury in a pre-season friendly game against El Salvador is currently out for the season.

From Inter Miami CF, “Nicolás offers us a sturdy defensive presence who we know will work hard and help command the backline,” said Chief Soccer Officer and Sporting Director Chris Henderson. “He’s been successful in several high-quality competitions throughout his career, and we’re excited to bring him on board to help us compete for titles in 2024. We believe his experience will be an asset for us.”

Friere is believed to provide a strong defense line as his experience will be helpful for Gerardo Martino’s side. He is expected to fill the space for Kamal Miller who was traded earlier this offseason to Portland Thornes.
