India vs New Zealand: Indian selectors to hold a meeting to pick new T20I skipper, squad for upcoming T20I series against New Zealand

India vs New Zealand: The All India Senior Selection Committee is soon expected to meet in the next couple of days to announce India’s shortest format squad for the upcoming home series against New Zealand. India is all set to host the Kiwis for a short tour of three T20I matches and two Test matches upon the completion of the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup 2021 in the United Arab Emirates.

The upcoming meeting of the selectors is of enormous importance as the new Indian T20I skipper will also be announced soon after the confirmation of the T20I squad. Virat Kohli, current India’s all-format skipper, has already decided to relinquish the T20I captaincy for India after the T20 World Cup 2021.

It is learnt that current team India’s vice-captain Rohit Sharma is the frontrunner for the captaincy role while there are a few young names who can be appointed deputy to Sharma in T20Is. Moreover, a few experts believe that BCCI could possibly opt for split captaincy where ODI and T20I captaincy will be handed to some other guy while the test reins will be under Virat Kohli.

Moreover, it has been learnt that the senior Indian players will be given rest for the three-match T20I series against New Zealand. Players such as Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah have been continuously playing cricket for over seven months on the trot. To begin with India’s IPL, then WTC followed by marathon test series against England, then comes the UAE IPL leg and the T20 World Cup 2021 there has been constant cricket.

The bubble fatigue among the players has been highlighted by ace Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah after India lost to New Zealand in its second T20 World Cup 2021 match. Bumrah reckons that players tend to miss their families and there is huge mental fatigue on the cricketer when they play for constant seven-eight months.

India’s head coach appointment:

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is also assumed to announce the new head coach of team India soon after the announcement of the T20I squad against New Zealand.

Ravi Shastri, the current head coach of team India, is set to quit his job as the ongoing T20 World Cup 2021 is his final assignment with the senior Men in Blues.

In all its likelihood, former Indian cricketer and NCA chief Rahul Dravid is expected to take up the roles for India. A few days back Dravid was reported to have officially applied for India’s head coach post.
