India’s Next Coach? 3 Coaches Who Could Replace Gautam Gambhir

After India’s tragic loss in the two-match test series against South Africa by 2-0, Head Coach Gautam Gambhir is now under fire. India lost their first test match against South Africa by 30 runs at Eden Gardens in Kolkata, and then, they lost again in the second test in Guwahati. This was India’s first home test series loss against South Africa since the 1999-2000 season.
The India Team used to dominate test cricket at home, especially under the captaincy of Virat Kohli and the head coach Ravi Shastri. Later, Rohit Sharma took charge along with Rahul Dravid as head coach. Things were good at this time as well. But after Gautam Gambhir took charge as head coach, things didn’t go well.
Gambhir started well after the T20 World Cup 2024; however, India even won the Champions Trophy 2025 under him. But in test cricket, the results have been disappointing. India lost against New Zealand by 3-0, then 1-3 in Australia.
Even after Shubman Gill became the test captain, India’s struggle in test cricket continues. The Five-match test series against England was drawn by 2-2 earlier this year. However, India won against West Indies by 2-0, but the current loss against South Africa put the Indian Team in trouble again.
VVS Laxman
VVS Laxman is currently the head of the National Cricket Academy (NCA). he has already coached India several times as a temporary coach. In 2022, he coached India during the T20I series against Ireland, the Asia Cup, and the New Zealand series.
Laxman also coached the Indian Team during the Asian Games 2023, where India won the gold medal. He also worked with India A, especially the U19 players; therefore, VVS Laxman would be the most reliable replacement of Gautam Gambhir as India’s head coach.
Sourav Ganguly
The Former Indian Captain and BCCI President, Sourav Ganguly, is also another strong candidate. He is currently the head coach of Pretoria Capitals in SA20 and has also worked with Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League (IPL).
Andy Flower
The Former Zimbabwean Cricketer, Andy Flower, is one of the most successful coaches of recent times. He was the coach of Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the IPL 2025, when the franchise lifted its first IPL title.
He has also coached the England Men’s Cricket Team, and under him, England won three Ashes series and the T20 World Cup 2010. Andy Flower is one of the most experienced coaches, and he could be one of the best choices as overseas head coach for the Indian Team.
