IND vs NZ ODI Series: Team India's Expected Squad for New Zealand ODIs – Players Who Could Earn Their Place After Vijay Hazare Performances

Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Ishan Kishan, and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi impressed on Day 1 of the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2025–26, strengthening their chances of making India’s ODI squad for the New Zealand series starting January 11.

The India vs New Zealand ODI series is set to begin on January 11th, and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has instructed all Indian international players to play at least two matches in the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2025-26. After the first day of the tournament, there are four players whose place in the ODI squad against New Zealand seems almost certain. Let's take a look at these four players in this article.

Here are the top performers from today’s Vijay Hazare Trophy matches

1. Rohit Sharma

Rohit Sharma, who recently impressed with his performance against South Africa in international cricket, showcased his explosive batting skills today in the List A Vijay Hazare Trophy match against Sikkim. Rohit scored a magnificent 155 runs off just 94 balls, including 18 fours and 9 sixes.

Rohit Sharma brings experience to the opening position for India and plays attacking cricket in the initial overs, while the team also performs well under his leadership. Therefore, no selector should have any doubts about his fitness and batting skills.

2. Virat Kohli

In modern-day cricket, if a list of the greatest run-chasers were compiled, Virat Kohli's name would undoubtedly be at the top.  Recently, against South Africa, Kohli silenced his critics by scoring 135 runs in the first match, 102 runs in the second, and an unbeaten 65 runs in the third match.

In today's Vijay Hazare Trophy 2025 match against Andhra Pradesh, he answered all the selectors' questions by playing an innings of 131 runs off 101 balls.

3. Ishan Kishan

Ishan Kishan also showcased his explosive batting against Karnataka today, setting a new record for the fastest century in List A cricket, achieving the feat in just 33 balls. A remarkable aspect of his innings was that he accomplished this while batting at number six. This performance could potentially earn him a place in the team as the second wicketkeeper-batsman.

Earlier this month, Ishan Kishan was the top run-scorer in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy while playing for Jharkhand and also led his team to victory, which resulted in his selection for the T20I World Cup 2026 squad.

4. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi turned heads in the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy 2025-26 with a sensational batting performance for Bihar against Arunachal. At 14 years and 272 days old, he became the youngest player to score a century in men's List A cricket, smashing a blistering 100 in only 36 balls, which is also one of the fastest hundreds in domestic one-day history. Sooryavanshi went well beyond the century mark, scoring 190 off 84 balls to lead Bihar to a record-breaking team total of 574/6, the highest score in men's List A cricket.
