The Indian Cricket Team batter Virat Kohli was at his best with the bat in the first ODI against the South African Cricket Team. The match between the two teams took place on Sunday, January 11 at the BCA Stadium in Vadodara.

After New Zealand set up a massive target of 301 for India to chase, Virat Kohli brought up his best and took the game away from the opposition. The premier batter walked out to bat after India lost Rohit Sharma (26) lost his wicket early in the innings. 

Virat Kohli set the tone of the chase right from the start as he counter-attacked the bowlers and slammed them all over the park. The premier batter, who has been in sensational form, carried on his good form and played yet another brilliant innings.

Virat Kohli first hit a half-century and then was looking all set for a century. However, he couldn’t carry on as slammed a century. He fell in the 90s as the BCA stadium in Vadodara turned silent as many expected him to get to his century.

Virat Kohli slammed 93 runs off 91 balls with his innings including eight fours and one six. Thanks to his heroics with the bat, India chased the target of 301 runs with ease and went 1-0 up in the series.

Although, Virat Kohli failed to slam a ton, he broke several records, here are all of them: 

  • Third batter to reach 28,000 international runs.
  • Fastest to reach 28,000 runs in 624 innings.
  • Becomes second second-highest run-scorer in ODI cricket, surpassing Kumar Sangakkara's tally of 28,016 runs.
  • Overtakes Kumar Sangakkara (66) to register the most half-centuries at the number three position (67).
  • Completed 100 half-centuries across formats at No.3, joining Ricky Ponting and Kumar Sangakkara.
  • Etches fifth-highest partnership for India against New Zealand in ODIs (Virat Kohli & Shubman Gill- 118 runs)
  • Registers five consecutive fifties in ODIs for the fifth time in his career
  • Becomes the fifth batter to score more than 3000 runs against New Zealand across three formats. (Others- Sachin Tendulkar, Ricky Ponting, Joe Root, Jacques Kallis).
