Gautam Gambhir attacks Rohit Sharma on gaining sympathy over ODI captaincy snub; Issues statement on Ro-Ko's chances for the 2027 World Cup
Rohit Sharma was snubbed as India's ODI Captain for the upcoming tour to Australia despite being named as a player in the squad. This led to widespread criticism as Indian Cricket Fans were split between Rohit Sharma's possible retirement before 2027 World Cup and his dazzling aura as India's white ball skipper.
However, the blow of these criticisms were laid upon Rohit's successor, the Indian skipper Shubman Gill and the Indian head coach Gautam Gambhir. The chemistry between the duo has been inspirational as they have always kept each other's back at times of criticism.
“Shubman Gill has already passed his toughest Test in England” Gautam Gambhir stern reply shuts critics
Hence, now on another occasion the Indian coach has come forward to back his captain and has held himself worthy than any other player in the Indian team. He has clearly pointed as Shubman Gill's commanding leadership portrayed during India's recent success in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy under the tough English conditions.
When none could rely on the young India team in the absence of their veterans Rohit and Virat, Shubman Gill led by example as he neared even Sunil Gavaskar's record on the English soil. Gill mastered Test cricket ever since the added responsibility has been passed onto him.
Gambhir from the post-match conference said, “He’s already passed his toughest test in England in tough conditions. Important to stay in the present for now.”
He further went on to add that Shubman Gill doesn't need any backing or favour to be the Indian skipper since he is the most deserving candidate and has done enough to be offered the role.
“No one has done him a favour by making him the Test and ODI captain. He deserves every bit of it. I can’t ask for more from him. He passed the test in England. The team has responded well to his leadership,” he added.
Gautam Gambhir hints at Rohit-Kohli's chances for the 2027 World Cup
While speaking in the same Post-match conference following India's promising and first Test series win under Gautam Gambhir, he was questioned on his stance for Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli participation in the next World Cup. Looking pretty unbothered to answer it, he avoided any statements and claimed to keep their focus on the present.
“Look, ODI World Cup is still about two and a half years away and I think it is very important to stay in the present," Gautam Gambhir stated.
However, he has recognised the importance of these players for the Australia series and has also stated that it is expected to be a very good series for them as well as the Indian team.
“Obviously, there are quality players coming back and their experience is going to be handful in Australia as well. Hopefully, those two guys will have a successful tour and more importantly, as a team, we will have a successful tour," he added.
