Faf du Plessis in line to become RCB’s next captain for IPL 2022: South African opener batsman Faf du Plessis is likely to carry the captain’s duties in the upcoming fifteenth edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) for the Royal Challengers Bangalore. RCB will see a shift in the captaincy after a decade long service of Virat Kohli comes to an end.

If you missed anything, let me remind you, Virat Kohli decided to step down from the captaincy role in RCB midway through the IPL 2021. He announced that the IPL 2021 will be his final stint as the skipper of RCB and further he wants to focus solely on his batting.

It must be noted that Glenn Maxwell’s name has been ruled out of the captaincy, as he will not be available for the first few matches of the IPL 2022 due to his national duties.

With Glenn Maxwell getting out of the track, Faf du Plessis becomes the most prominent and prolific player who can take charge of the team.

“Faf looks the right choice but we have time to decide. We were waiting for clarity on Maxwell’s situation and availability. Now, that it looks certain that he will be missing the first few matches, Faf is the right choice,” an RCB source confirmed to InsideSport.

Royal Challengers Bangalore grabbed the services of Faf du Plessis after shelling out INR 7 Crores. RCB fought an intense bidding war against Chennai Super Kings and Delhi Capitals to acquire du Plessis.

If we look besides Faf, wicketkeeper-batsman Dinesh Karthik is also a viable option to lead the IPL franchise, but his form and consistency will be a major subject. Karthik is no longer active in the international circuit and hasn’t played a lot of cricket in the last two years or so.

Karthik has prior experience of leading the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the IPL 2020, but he stepped down from his roles midway through the tournament.

On the other hand, Faf du Plessis though hasn’t led any IPL franchise but carries a healthy experience of leading South Africa in all three formats. He had a very successful career leading South Africa and took his side to many memorable victories.

For the time being, we will have to wait for the official announcement to roll out from the RCB camp. Though Faf is the frontrunner to get the captaincy, RCB might look at others if they don’t want an overseas captain.
