"Dhoni and I Are Not Close Friends," Yuvraj Singh

Yuvraj Singh Opens up on his relationship with Dhoni: In a podcast on Youtube, Yuvraj Singh finally opens up on his relationship with MS Dhoni and reveals that they were never close friends outside the cricket field. There is a lot of toxicity in social media when it comes to individualism and individual fan bases which leads to hatred among cricket fans and these types of open and politically correct statements often end the ongoing debates between fans.

The toxicities in social media portray a sense of negativity in the relationships of cricketers who in real life are friends. Yuvraj Singh and MS Dhoni’s relationship has had a similar phase. They were good teammates together and shared the most memorable moments for Indian Cricket together.

Yuvraj Singh and MS Dhoni were perhaps India’s best middle-order hitters. Between them, they helped India win a lot of games throughout the 2000s and 2010s. In white-ball cricket, Yuvraj was Dhoni’s deputy as captain of Team India. Under Dhoni’s direction, Yuvraj was crucial to India’s victories in the 2011 ODI World Cup and the 2007 T20 World Cup. The 2011 ODI World Cup saw the former all-rounder, who announced his retirement from international cricket in 2019, win Player of the Tournament.

When Yuvraj Singh was a regular member of Team India, Dhoni and Yuvraj were thought to be extremely good friends. However, Yuvraj recently revealed in a talk show with a well-known YouTuber that he was never very close with the former Indian skipper. He said that the only reason he was friends with Dhoni was because the two of them were teammates when they batted for India. Other than that, he never grew close to the 42-year-old because of their different individual lifestyles.

Yuvraj Singh On His Relationship With Dhoni

Ranveer Allahbadia invited Yuvraj Singh for a talk show where he asked him about his relationship with MS Dhoni. Yuvraj Singh started the reply with “Why are you asking this question?” He then said “Me and Mahi are not close friends. We were friends because of cricket, we played together. Mahi’s lifestyle was very different from mine, so we were never close friends… When me and Mahi went on the ground, we gave more than 100% for our country together.

He was the captain, I was the vice-captain… When you are captain and vice-captain, there will be decision differences. Sometimes he made decisions I didn’t like, sometimes I made decisions that he didn’t like. That happens in every team.

When I was at the end of my career when I wasn’t getting the right picture of my career, I spoke to him and asked him for his advice. He was the guy who told me that the selection committee is not looking at you right now. I was like, at least I got to know the real picture about my career from someone. This is just before the 2019 World Cup. That is the reality,” he added.

Not everybody gets the support in Indian cricket that MS Dhoni has received, says Yuvraj Singh

Everybody has a different lifestyle, and skill set. Certain people hang out with certain people. You don’t have to be best of friends with everyone to perform on the field. If you take any team, all eleven don’t get along. Some guys get along, some don’t. When you are in the park, put your ego behind you and contribute on the field,” said Yuvraj

“There were times when MS was injured, and I was the runner for him. I remember there was one moment when he was in the 90s, and I wanted to give him the strike to help him reach his 100. I remember diving for him, for his second run, as he was in the 90s,” Yuvi said.

“Similarly, when I was batting in a World Cup match, I was 48 against the Netherlands. There were two runs to get and Mahi blocked both the balls so that I should get 50,” he said.

He concluded his answer by saying, ” In the park, it is professionalism which matters more than friendship. We are hardcore professionals. I wish him well and I am sure he wishes me well and someday we may play golf together.”
