Hardik Pandya dealt Sri Lanka a major blow by dismissing Kusal Mendis off the fourth ball. However, Nissanka and Kusal Perera, batting explosively, pushed India back. They shared a century partnership of 127 runs for the second wicket. They decimated the inexperienced Indian pace attack, adding 72 runs for one wicket in the powerplay. This was the joint highest powerplay score in this Asia Cup. Nissanka and Mendis each reached their half-centuries in 25 balls. Even the Indian spinners couldn't contain them. Sri Lanka's 100 runs were reached in the ninth over. Perera was dismissed after scoring 58 runs in 32 balls, including eight fours and a six. He was stumped trying to play a delivery from Varun outside off.
Nissanka smashed his first T20I century
Sri Lankan captain Asalanka managed only five runs off nine balls before being caught by Shubman Gill while lofting a Kuldeep delivery. Kamindu Mendis (3) also failed to do much, falling to Arshdeep after scoring three runs. But Nissanka held firm. He smashed a six off Arshdeep to reach his maiden T20I century in 53 balls. He was dismissed by Harshit Rana in the final over after scoring 107 runs. However, Dasun Shanaka forced a tie.
Abhishek Sharma once again dominated India's batting.
Batting first after losing the toss, India lost Shubman Gill (4) in the second over. He was caught by Maheesh Theekshana off his own bowling. Captain Surya's poor form continued, and he was trapped LBW by Wanindu Hasaranga after scoring 12 runs off 13 balls. However, Abhishek continued his explosive form, helping India end the powerplay at 71 for one. The batsman spared no Sri Lankan bowler and scored a fifty for the third consecutive match. He reached 50 runs in 22 balls, finishing his innings with 61 runs in 31 balls, studded with eight fours and two sixes. He was dismissed by Charith Asalanka.
Axar's six takes the score past 200
In the middle order, Sanju Samson and Tilak kept the run rate steady. They added 66 runs for the fourth wicket, taking India past 150 in 15 overs. Samson, who had struggled until now, was in form in this match. He was dismissed after scoring 39 runs in 23 balls, including one four and three sixes. Hardik Pandya managed just two runs, being caught by Dushmantha Chameera. But Tilak and Axar Patel (21) combined to take India past 200. Axar hit a six off the last ball of the innings to complete the first 200-plus score of the Asia Cup 2025.
