Asia Cup 2023: Team India’s pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah is likely to be named Rohit Sharma’s deputy for the upcoming Asia Cup 2023, which starts on August 30 in Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

Reportedly, Jasprit Bumrah has pipped all-rounder Hardik Pandya in the captaincy race following the latter’s poor tactical performance in the recently concluded India vs West Indies T20I series.

Notably, India lost the five-game Twenty20 series against West Indies by 3-2. To everyone’s surprise, Hardik Pandya, who is strongly viewed as the future leader of the Indian white-ball setup, looked clueless with his on-field decisions. His poor batting performances added to his frustration.

The BCCI will hold an Asia Cup 2023 selection meeting on Monday (August 21), which will be chaired by the chairman of selectors – Ajit Agarkar. The meeting will also be attended by head coach Rahul Dravid and skipper Rohit Sharma. While Dravid will be physically present in the meeting in Delhi, Rohit will join via video conferencing from Mumbai.

As per the reports, the selectors are impressed with the comeback of Jasprit Bumrah during the India vs Ireland 1st T20I and he is likely to be rewarded with the vice-captaincy role during the Asia Cup 2023 and possibly for the impending ICC World Cup 2023.

The speedster scalped two wickets in his comeback game, a couple of nights ago. He took just two deliveries to make a breakthrough and another three deliveries to get his second wicket.

The selection committee on 21st August, will pick the final squad for the Asia Cup 2023. It remains to be seen if the BCCI names a 15-member or 17-member squad for the continental tournament.

The same set of players will be expected to feature in the ICC World Cup 2023 squad as well. The deadline for submitting the World Cup 2023 squad is September 5. Teams will require special approval from the ICC for making a change in their World Cup squad after September 5.
