[Watch] Phillips' insane grab left Kohli bamboozled on his 300th ODI; Major upset for team India as top-order dismissed within powerplay
The India vs New Zealand 2025 ICC Champions Trophy encounter marked Indian veteran star Virat Kohli’s 300th appearance in international ODI cricket, as he made the headlines and was much anticipated by fans and peers to score big on this special occasion.
The Dubai track for the match against the Kiwis didn’t seem very likely to bat on with much lateral movement in the powerplay. In form batter Shubman Gill’s early wicket in the 3rd over of the game marked the arrival of the King on the pitch alongside skipper Rohit Sharma.
Skipper fell off in the 5th over as well to tall Kyle Jamieson in an attempt to pull the good-length bumper from the lanky medium pacer. After the captain's wicket much relied on the King’s approach to the game.
Virat Kohli didn’t look very promising in the deliveries he faced though a leading edge on the ball of Matt Henry flew past over the head of Glenn Phillips, probably New Zealand’s best man on the field.
Glenn Phillips often showed why is he called a supernatural fielder, ever since the first game, with the stunning game-changing grab of Pakistan skipper Mohammed Rizwan in game 1 of the tournament.
After the misjudged edge that flew past Phillips and went to the boundary for a four, Kohli looked confident in smashing an outside off-stump delivery in an attempt to thread it through the point region. But Phillips had different plans in his head when he grabbed a stunner out of thin air sending Kohli off on his 300th ODI.
India failed to score 50 in the powerplay of an ICC event for the first time in 2 years
Ever since India hosted the ODI World Cup at home, which marked a stellar start in all games handed to Indians by their skipper Rohit Sharma and aided along with their most veteran batter Virat Kohli, India kept scoring over 50+ runs on all occasions since the World Cup at home.
Coming into the Champions Trophy as well, Rohit continued his commanding hitting prowess with the bat alongside Gill to give India consolidating starts. However, this is for the first time after almost 12 games in the ICC 50-over format that India has been left stranded with a score of less than 50 in the powerplay.
India at the time of writing was 45/3, with 37/3 being the score in the first 10 overs of the game.
