ENGvsIND: Team India’s young batsman Prithvi Shaw has recently got a lot of praise especially after he overcame his weakness which pulled him out of India’s test team. His recent performances in limited-overs cricket and in IPL has also encouraged the selectors in picking him for the longest format of cricket and as per the reports, the Indian management is looking to have the services of Prithvi Shaw in the upcoming India vs England test series.
While a couple of experts feel that Shaw should replace Cheteshwar Pujara in the Indian test team, the others are of the view to open with him.
Former Australian spinner Brad Hogg reckons that Shaw is more suited at number three and should replace Pujara if the Indian management feels there is any need for replacement.
“If anyone was going to replace Pujara it would be Prithvi Shaw. Feel he is more suited there than the opening. Has a lot of talent and a long future. He is not in the tour group but a wild card choice. #EngvIND,” Hogg tweeted.
The Indian selectors went past Shaw’s name for the longest format after the cricketer had a poor run in the New Zealand and Australia tour. Young Shubman Gill was given chances in Shaw’s place and it worked for India.
However, after the injury to Shubman Gill, who will fly back home to undergo a rehab program due to a shin stress injury, the debate has been initiated whether India should call Shaw for the tour or go with the options available with the team.
Team India right now has the services of Mayank Agarwal, who is a specialist opener and had a prolific 2018-19 test season. Agarwal plundered massive two double hundreds against South Africa in the tour.
To make choices even fuzzier for the management, Bengal’s Abhimanyu Easwaran is also an option to go with. Although the cricketer had no miraculous records to flex, the 25-years old enjoyed a successful 2018-19 domestic season.
As per the reports of various news outlets, the Indian management is convinced to have the services of young Prithvi Shaw, who is currently in Sri Lanka’s limited-overs tour. It is also learnt that the management will very soon raise a formal request to the BCCI for the same.
“Here is a batsman (Prithvi Shaw) in the absolute form right now, playing an inconsequential series (in Sri Lanka) whereas he can be in England and the team will have a cushion to fall back on. It’s been five days now and the selectors haven’t even blinked yet,” the Times of India quoted the source.
With what’s going on inside the Indian management in England, the possibility of Prithvi Shaw opening the innings with Rohit Sharma in the Test matches against England is maximum. However, Mayank Agarwal will be kept as the backup, in case any injury concern arises.
