Vivo IPL 2021: Mumbai Indians director of cricket operations Zaheer Khan on Monday explained why Indian all-rounder Hardik Pandya was not given over to bowl. The all-rounder was having some shoulder concern that is the reason why he didn?t bowl in the first game against RCB however Khan said that he will soon contribute to the team?s success with the ball too.



Rohit Sharma?s Mumbai Indians failed to break the curse of losing the opening game once again as they lose to Virat Kohli?s RCB in Chennai.



?Hardik, as a whole package is always of great value, everyone knows that. It was a workload related thing in the previous game,? Zaheer said at the pre-match conference ahead of their game against Kolkata Knight Riders.



?He bowled in the whole England series, in the last ODI he bowled about nine overs and that is why in consultation with the physio, we had to take that approach.



?There was a bit of concern around his shoulder but that is not an issue to worry about now. He will surely get to bowl very soon and contribute with the ball in hand too.?



Former Indian bowler Zaheer Khan further said that Kieron Pollard is the sixth bowling option for us right now.



?Pollard is our sixth bowling option. We are not concerned about anything in that department.?

ICC T20 World Cup 2021: Former Indian ace pacer Zaheer Khan has revealed his choice of 15 men Indian squad for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup, which is slated to be held in the UAE and Oman, October 17 onwards. The veteran cricket has left behind some notable names while picking his squad.



Khan, who has over 600 wickets across formats for India, overlooked chinaman bowler Kuldeep Yadav along with all-rounder Krunal Pandya. Other well known missing players in his list were Shreyas Iyer and Shardul Thakur, who have been doing well for India in the shortest format.



Iyer, 26 years old, is currently recovering from his shoulder injury which he sustained during the India vs England home series.



The pace stalwart went with Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul as his two first-choice openers in the upcoming T20 World Cup 2021. Both the Indian openers share a great camaraderie and have fantastic records in the format.



"I will open with KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma. Virat and Surya will follow them. I know Virat has made the statement that he wants to open the innings. But I would still say that Virat only opens in case Hardik is not available to bowl. In that scenario, you can sacrifice one batsman and get an extra bowler," said Zaheer Khan in Cricbuzz live post-match show.



He further backed his Mumbai Indians (MI) batsman Suryakumar Yadav to come at four. Yadav impressed everyone ever since he stepped into the international schedule for India. The dashing batsman is consistent and owing to which he has received his ODI cap and maiden Test call-up.



He then picked up wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant and all-rounder Hardik Pandya at 5 and 6. The duo will add firepower to India?s batting unit along with depth.



Picking up his spinners, the former pacer went with two impressive leggie?s in Rahul Chahar and Yuzvendra Chahal. To everyone?s surprise, Khan left out left-arm spinner Kuldeep Yadav from the T20I squad.?

"I have Chahal as the lead leg spinner and also went in with Rahul Chahar as his backup. In this format, we have seen that leg spinner is such a crucial factor. Chakravarthy/Sundar will be the spinners who would be bowling with the new ball. If you want that mystery element, you can choose Chakravarthy, but otherwise, you can go in with Sundar as well," Zaheer Khan added.



Soon came another shocking element in Khan?s squad when he uttered that ace pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar is not certain and he kept a choice between T Natarajan and Bhuvneshwar Kumar.

Sometimes, when this sort of thing happens (criticism after Lord's Test), it affects your batting too. Instead, he polished his batting further.



"The way the match started and the first day played out and the way (James) Anderson and the bowlers performed so well to bundle out India cheaply, he would have definitely benefitted from it. Let's not forget the opening stand. In this innings, he batted more freely and was playing his shots more often. The fact that he is well-versed with this ground was also an added advantage," explained Zaheer.



The England skipper structured his innings well right from the start as he looked positive and believed his instincts. The batter absorbed all the pressure by playing sensible strokes which fetched him good runs.&nbsp;

MI head coach Mahela Jayawardene on the opening day of the Vivo IPL 2021 phase 2 reasoned Hardik?s exclusion from the team was due to a slight niggle.



Zaheer said that all the teams in the IPL prefer smart preparations and knows how to stay on top of the opposite team.



?As you know, IPL is a very highly competitive tournament, so teams are always trying to have a one up on each other and they are getting smart in their preparation and these days every team is analysing every other team. So we have to stay at the top.



?The focus has always been on us, this team has been so successful because we have been focusing on our processes, our strengths and our players who are taking the field. And these are the players who have got us the championship, so we have that kind of approach and we have had quite a lot of good conversations around those things,? he said.



The second half of the IPL 2021 is all about pressure, the intensity of matches is high and MI knows how to bring the best in stressful situations, added Zaheer Khan.



The middle-order crisis of MI is not a concern for the franchise. Khan stressed that it is always about finding the right rhythm and once players get that they become unstoppable.



?But I don?t see it (the middle-order form) as a concern. It is just about finding that rhythm. You have seen in this format and this tournament particularly that once you get on a roll, you can win a couple of games together,? he said.

India vs New Zealand: Former Indian left-arm pacer Zaheer Khan heaped praises on young pacer Mohammad Siraj for his brilliant bowling against New Zealand. Khan reckons that Siraj?s confidence in his bowling is growing with each passing day and the pacer looks more assured than he was before.
