Shubman Gill FIT for India vs South Africa 1st T20I? Check Latest Updates
Shubman Gill has fully recovered from his neck injury and received fitness clearance. He joins the T20I squad and is set to return as India face South Africa on December 9.
As India gear up for another high-intensity challenge against South Africa, one question has dominated every cricket conversation over the last few days. Is Shubman Gill finally fit and ready to return to the field? The answer, as of December 8, brings relief to Indian fans.
Gill has been out of action since the second day of the Eden Gardens Test, where neck spasms forced him off the field. What initially seemed like a minor setback soon turned into a frustrating waiting period, with Gill missing both Tests and all three ODIs of the South Africa tour. For a player who leads India in Tests and ODIs and carries the responsibility of future leadership, the absence felt heavier than just a fitness concern.

The turning point came on December 3 at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru. Gill spent several days there under close medical supervision. More importantly, he did not just bat briefly. He batted for long periods, moved freely, and fielded without discomfort. The medical team wanted clarity on every aspect of his readiness, not just whether he could score runs, but whether he could move, dive, and throw without hesitation. By all indications, Gill answered every question convincingly.
Fast forward to December 8 morning in Bhubaneswar. Gill arrived late in the evening, visibly charged and mentally ready to return. Though he was not part of the ODI squad that played in Visakhapatnam, his presence with the T20I group was a statement in itself. The BCCI had earlier termed his selection for the T20I series as subject to fitness clearance. That clearance has now been granted.
India head coach Gautam Gambhir put an end to all speculation after the final ODI, confirming that Gill is fully fit, fine, and hungry to play. Those words carry weight, especially when they come from a coach who values intensity and commitment.
With the first T20I scheduled on December 9 at Barabati Stadium in Cuttack, Gill is very much in contention to feature. Even if he is eased back carefully, his return to the squad strengthens Indiaโs top order and leadership core.
