This year's Asia Cup 2025 took place at a time when political and diplomatic relations between India and Pakistan are extremely tense. This marked the first time the two teams had faced off on the cricket field since the Pahalgam terrorist attack and Operation Sindoor. Therefore, the shadow of that tension was clearly visible on the field.
From the start of the tournament, India had established a strategy to avoid any formalities with Pakistan. Before and after the match, Indian players avoided shaking hands with Pakistani players. There was also no interaction between the players of the two teams on the field.
Through cricket, India gave the message that it is very angry with Pakistan and cannot ignore the recent events. The Indian players made it clear that despite observing cricketing formalities, they would not pretend to have normal relations with Pakistan. This move was seen as a strong political and diplomatic message to Pakistan.
Now the women's team will also adopt this approach.
The same attitude will be seen in the Indian women's team as well. The India-Pakistan match in the Women's World Cup will be played on Sunday at a neutral in Colombo. The match will begin at 3 pm.
In this match too, the Indian women's players will refrain from shaking hands with the Pakistani players and will maintain a formal distance. This decision is believed to be inspired by the men's team's action and is a collective message from India that there is no room for normal behavior with Pakistan.
This strategy by India is not limited to sports. This move also sends a strong message to Pakistan at the diplomatic and political levels. Cricket has always been considered a mirror of relations between the two countries, and this time India has made it clear that normal decorum should not be expected on the cricket field until the situation returns to normal.
What did the BCCI say about the India-Pakistan match?
Regarding handshakes, BCCI Secretary Devjit Saikia states , "I can't say what the future holds, but our relationship with that nation is the same; nothing has changed in the past week. There will be adherence to all cricket protocols when India plays Pakistan in Colombo. I can only guarantee that all of the MCC's cricket regulations will be adhered to. At this point, I am unable to say with certainty whether there will be hugs or handshakes."
