Jake Fraser McGurk or Cooper Connolly—who joins Travis Head as an opener in the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy semi-finals against India?
Who will form Australia's semi-final opening pair alongside Travis Head? Youngsters Jake Fraser-McGurk and Cooper Connolly are in line to make their ICC event debut.
India will star against Australia in another ICC knockout game with the qualification of the Men in Blue into the semis of the ongoing Champions Trophy. India’s biggest concern playing against the Aussies would be their star opener, Travis Head.
Travis Head has a very impressive record against India in the ICC knockout events. However, adding to concerns for Aussies as well, Head’s opening partner for the Champions Trophy, Matt Short, has been ruled out due to a sudden injury.
Australia has reportedly included the travelling reserve Cooper Connolly in the squad, replacing Matt Short in the ICC Champions Trophy semi-final squad against India.
The Australian youngster is a like-for-like replacement for Short since he is known as a spin-bowling all-rounder who can bat both in the top order and also down the order. Connolly bowls a slow left-arm orthodox spin as the player made his debut across all three formats for Australia in 2024. Connolly led Australia in the 2022 U-19 World Cup and made his ODI debut against England in 2024 while receiving his baggy green in tests during the second test against Sri Lanka. Australia earlier identified Jake Fraser-McGurk as the ideal replacement opener for Matt Short, since he was the planned backup. However, considering his weak patch of form and also his exposed weakness to spin bowling, he might face difficulties playing against India. McGurk would mark his ICC debut with Australia if he gets to play in the semi-final against India. However, Cooper Connolly’s spin bowling can come in handy on the spin-favoring tracks of Dubai, while McGurk is not known to have bowled in any major game, either domestically or internationally. Also, Connolly has shown composure as a batter compared to McGurk, who is relatively brutish and known for his high-risk game. With Travis Head already being the high-risk player in the opening pair, Connolly might come in handy as an opener if he can support him with some firm batting at the top of the order.
