Ex-India players hints at Yashasvi Jaiswal's record breaking knock
Former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra believes Yashasvi Jaiswal might be setting his record-breaking innings, as Chopra has felt the intent behind Jaiswal's approach suggests that the batter might be thinking even bigger.
The young opener produced a stellar performance on the opening day of the Second Test against the West Indies in New Delhi. After his seventh hundred, he set the tone with a splendid 173*. The numbers speak volumes about the 22-year-old Indian star's form.
While some have also claimed him to be one of the finest players currently in the Indian team, many have also claimed that he deserves to feature across all three formats for the Indian team. With his stellar record, some have rated him highly over the likes of even Shubman Gill.
Aakash Chopra recognises stellar possibility for Yashasvi Jaiswal
Speaking on ESPNCricinfo, Aakash Chopra claimed that Yashasvi Jaiswal's discipline and patience indicate something extraordinary. With the West Indies bowling attack yet to truly challenge him, the former cricketer believes that the 22-year-old is chasing a monumental milestone.
“There is a possibility, and let’s be fair — it seems his eyes are set on something bigger. What that number is, we don’t know yet; we’ll find out in good time. If you look at any of his previous 150-plus scores, you’ll see plenty of aerial shots and sixes,” Chopra noted.
“In that home series against England where he piled up runs, including a double century, he was also the highest six-hitter — even challenging some of Virender Sehwag’s records for India in a Test series,” he added.
Chopra was struck by how Jaiswal managed to rein in his natural attacking instincts, as this time he scored all his runs without hitting a single six.
“This time, it’s different — 22 boundaries, and not a single one in the air. He’s taking his time. He’s not trying to dominate every over or every ball. It feels like his focus is on something far bigger — a goal that, at this stage, lies somewhere in the realm of imagination. No Indian has gone there yet, but it’s on the table. It’s within reach. Let’s see where he ends up,” Chopra said.
"300-loading for Yashasvi Jaiswal"
Former spinner Anil Kumble has suggested that Yashasvi Jaiswal might even get to a triple hundred on Day 2. India has only the likes of Virender Sehwag (2) and Karun Nair (1) among the triple-centurions in the longest of the game.
“Jaiswal is just getting better and better day by day. We’ve spoken about his hunger and his attitude toward building big innings, not just for himself but for the team. Even in the previous game, he got off to a good start but was dismissed early, so he’s certainly made up for that here," Kumble was quoted as saying on JioHotstar.
“Throughout his short career, he has shown that he doesn’t waste opportunities like these. Once he’s in, he makes it count, and that’s wonderful to see. He’s still out there, and he can go on to score big runs tomorrow (day two of the second Test)."
“As Sai Sudharsan mentioned, they certainly want to bat as long as possible. Shubman Gill said at the toss that they want to pile on the runs, and that’s exactly what the Indian batters have done on Day 1. Jaiswal now has a great opportunity, not just for a double hundred, but maybe even a triple hundred tomorrow," he added.
