After Shardul Thakur, Mumbai Indians buys another player! GT and WI all-rounder joins five-time champions for all-cash
In what has been a big development, the Mumbai Indians (MI) have made a big trade ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 auction. They have roped in Sherfane Rutherford from the Gujarat Titans (GT) as part of a trade, which is an all-cash deal.
This was the second trade by the Mumbai Indians, having roped in Shardul Thakur earlier. Sherfane Rutherford will be joining MI for a fee of INR 2.6 crore. This will be his second stint him with the MI team, having earlier won the title with the team in 2020.
Sherfane Rutherford played a massive role for the Gujarat Titans last year. The all-rounder played brilliant cameos for the team and powered them to wins in many games. His absence will leave a massive void in the GT lineup as they would be looking for a replacement in the league.
Acquired by GT for a fee of INR 2.6 crore, Rutherford will move to MI at his existing fee - IPL statement
“West Indies all-rounder Sherfane Rutherford is set to represent the Mumbai Indians (MI) in the IPL 2026 season following a successful trade from the Gujarat Titans (GT). Acquired by GT for a fee of INR 2.6 crore, Rutherford will move to MI at his existing fee.
“Rutherford has played 23 IPL matches so far, having earlier represented Delhi Capitals in 2019 and Royal Challengers Bengaluru in 2022. He was part of the MI squad in 2020 and the Kolkata Knight Riders in 2024, but did not feature in the playing XI during those seasons.”
Sherfane Rutherford has played T20Is for the West Indies and holds the record for the highest sixth-wicket partnership in T20Is, having stitched together a 139-run stand with Andre Russell against Australia in Perth. He has been one of the best power-hitters in world cricket.
With him, the Mumbai Indians would be hoping that he fills in the void left by Kieron Pollard. With the kind of player he is, he is all set to feature in the XI in almost every match.
