IND vs SA: In a big setback to the hosts, South African captain Temba Bavuma is all set to miss the upcoming New Year test against India after suffering a hamstring injury. South African coach Shukri Cornard confirmed the development after they defeated India by an innings and 32 runs in the Centurian test.



With Temba Bavuma already ruled out of the IND vs SA 2nd Test in Cape Town, veteran batter Deal Elgar is set to lead the South African side. Interestingly, the Cape Town test will also be his last swansong as he bids his final goodbye to the game of cricket.



Cornard confirmed that Bavuma didn't have a tear on his hamstring, rather it was a strain. He pulled up his hamstring during day one of the India vs South Africa Centurian Test. The incident occurred while Bavuma chased the delivery off Virat Kohli's blade. After pulling up his hamstring, Bavuma immediately left the field and he was continuously monitored by the medics. 



It's worth noting that many fans criticised Bavuma for not walking into the field to bat in the second innings when all-rounder Marco Jansen was running short of partners at the other end. Jansen remained unbeaten at 84 runs and everyone speculated that the captain would walk out to aid his compatriot, however, this could never turn into a reality.



Defending South Africa's move to not send Temba Bavuma out to bat, Conrad explained that the batter was consistently under examination. It would have been risky to send Bavuma out, said the Protea coach. He also added that South Africa was in a good position with over 150 runs lead in the second innings.



"We were constantly giving ourselves maximum time so we could give out the right information. If we lost wickets early, he would have walked on. With 150 runs ahead, I felt it wasn't necessary to risk Temba," Shukri Cornard said.



"Bavuma was diagnosed with a left hamstring strain, not a tear, and will have the injury assessed in two weeks' time to determine his availability for his next assignment, with the Sunrisers Eastern Cape at the SA20," the coach added.



With his commitments with SA20 franchise Sunrisers Eastern Cape, Temba Bavuma is already unavailable for the two-game test series against New Zealand next year.



 "He will not play in South Africa's two-Test series against New Zealand early next year because of his SA20 commitments."



The India vs South Africa 2nd Test is scheduled to commence on January 03 in Cape Town.

Team India lost the Boxing Day test in Centurian within three days by an innings and 32 runs. With the defeat, a test series win in South Africa remains a far-fetched dream for the Indian team. 



The visitors were blown away by Dean Elgar's magnificent century knock followed by an impressive bowling display by the Proteas. It turned out to be a comprehensive failure by the Indian side, despite some sublime batting efforts from KL Rahul and Virat Kohli.



After leaving Centurian after the optional practice session which was attended by many Indian players including captain Rohit Sharma, the Indian side travelled to Cape Town where the second test of the two-game series will be held.



The India vs South Africa 2nd test is scheduled to begin on January 03 at Newlands in Cape Town. 



After landing in Cape Town, the Indian team was spotted having an optional training session. Though it was optional, Virat Kohli was one among many others who was seen having a go at the bowlers.



It's worth noting that Virat Kohli didn't opt for the optional training at the SuperSport Park in Centurian a couple of days back, however, he was spotted sweating out in the middle during the second option training session in Cape Town on January 01.



Virat Kohli, who had a decent outing in the first test, tonked ace spinner Ravichandran Ashwin for a six, as seen in the video shared by PTI news agency journalist Kushan Sarkar on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Kohli was also seen facing a local left-arm pacer during his stay in the middle in a bid to counter Marco Jansen's skillset during the second test. 



Rohit Sharma and Co are likely to have another practice session on January 02 before the team heads out for the India vs South Africa 2nd test. 



The team has got a new addition in the form of pacer Avesh Khan as a replacement for Mohammad Shami. The veteran bowler is yet to completely recover from his heel injury.

India vs South Africa 2nd Test: Team India and South Africa are all set to lock horns against each other in the second and final match of the Freedom Test Series. The Proteas currently lead the 2-match Test series 1-0 as they humiliated Rohit Sharma?s men by defeating them by a huge margin of an innings and 32 runs.



In the first innings of the previous match, India, after being asked to bat by Temba Bavuma, suffered a top-order collapse as Yashasvi Jaiswal (17 runs), Rohit Sharma (5 runs), and Shubman Gill (2 runs) got dismissed cheaply. A partnership between Shreyas Iyer and Virat Kohli and a brilliant knock of 101 runs by KL Rahul steading the Men in Blue?s ship helped the Indian team post a total of 245 runs in the 1st inning. The South African trio of Nandre Burger, Kagiso Rabada, and Marco Jansen had the last laugh as the Indian batters had no answer to the pace and bounce of the South African bowlers.



In reply to the 245 runs posted on the board by the batting unit of the Men in Blue, South Africa showed great resilience as they managed to score 405 runs in their first inning. Stand-in Captain Dean Elgar led from the front with a brilliant knock of 185 runs, and he fell short of a double hundred by just 15 runs. He got pretty good support from David Bedingham (56 runs) and Marco Jansen (84 runs). Jasprit Bumrah (4/69) and Mohammed Siraj (2/91) got crucial breakthroughs for the Men in Blue, but it was not enough to prevent the Proteas from getting a lead of 163 runs in their first inning.



Trailing by 163 runs, the opening duo of Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal got out cheaply once again in the second inning. A partnership between Virat Kohli and Shubman Gill steadied the ship of the Men in Blue, but Marco Jansen got the better of Gill and dismissed him for 26 runs. After the dismissal of Shubman Gill, no other batter provided any kind of support to Virat Kohli at the other end, which eventually led to the downfall of the Indian team as Virat?s fighting knock of 76 runs wasn't enough to prevent the Men in Blue from getting all out for 131 runs, and the Men in Blue lost the first match by an inning and 32 runs.



Nandre Burger, Kagiso Rabada, and Marco Jansen once again dominated the Indian batting unit as they managed to get crucial wickets for South Africa and crushed the Men in Blue?s hopes of winning their first ever Test Series on South African soil. Rohit Sharma and his men would look to bounce back in the second test with a win in Cape Town and prevent a series whitewash against the Proteas.

Rohit Sharma likely to field same playing11 for India: Indian captain Rohit Sharma appeared cool as ever and unfazed by Team India's defeat in the first test against South Africa as he walked in for the pre-match press conference for the 2nd test. Though the Indian side faced criticism for their underpower show in the opening test, the Indian captain stressed showing faith in the youngsters.



Team India had multiple issues during the first test in the Centurian. The lively grass scrutinised the Indian batters comprehensively while when it comes to the bowling department, the Indian pacers were not as good as the Proteas were on the same pitch.



The team felt the lack of experience in its bowling unit as well. Particularly, the likes of debutant Prasidh Krishna and all-rounder Shardul Thakur couldn't find their rhythm throughout the game, which ended inside three days.



However, despite such a dull outing in the first test, Indian captain Rohit Sharma believes in backing players and providing them with enough opportunities to prove their worth in gold.



"Honestly, I haven't thought too much about that (pace bowling changes) although we have briefly chatted with the management and the coaching staff. We've not completely finalised our playing XI. Obviously, everyone is available for selection. There are no injury concerns. We'll sit down in the evening and decide what is the right one. I still feel that sometimes when you have inexperience in your attack, we have that, you have to show some faith," said the Indian captain during the pre-match conference.



Debutant Prasidh Krishna bowled 20 overs in the first test in which he conceded 90 runs at an expensive economy of 4.70, though he managed to scalp his maiden wicket trapping opposition wicketkeeper batter Kyle Verreynne.



Meanwhile, Shardul Thakur had an even worse outing as he conceded runs at an economy of 5.30. He too got a wicket to his name.



"That can happen to any team. Like I said in the last post-match press conference about Prasidh playing his first game, we all get nervous when you are playing your first game. I will still back that thought of mine that he has got good ability to succeed at this level, especially in this format. It's just about showing faith and trust in everyone, and getting the job done from them."
