ENGvsIND: In a very poor beginning to the new cycle of the ICC World Test Championship, ICC has imposed a 40 per cent match fee and 2 crucial Test Championship points from both India and England for maintaining a slow over-rate during the first test at Trent Bridge, Nottingham.



India and England were found two overs short of their allowed timing as match referee Chris Broad imposed sanctions on the two participating teams.



The sanctions were forced on the team as per the ICC Code of Conduct for Player and Player Support Personnel. As per article 2.22, each team is fined 20 per cent of their match fee for getting one over short of the given time.



Moreover, the rules for the WTC says that each team is penalised one point for each over short.

There was no need for the formal hearing as both the skippers, Joe Root and Virat Kohli, accepted the proposed sanctions by match referee Chris Broad.



The first test match between India and England, which apparently was the beginning of the ICC World Test Championship 2021-23, ended in a draw as the rain played spoilsport.



Both the teams had a clear chance of winning on day 5, but not a single ball was bowled due to constant showers.



Both India and England moved to the Home of Cricket, Lords (London) for the second test, starting August 12.

ICC penalise India with 1 WTC Point for poor over-rate in Centurion test against South Africa: The International Cricket Council (ICC) on Saturday docked one crucial World Test Championship (WTC) point from India for maintaining a slow over-rate in the Centurion test match. Team India fell one over short of their required target due to which a WTC point has been penalised by the ICC.



During the opening test match against South Africa, team India, though, won the match by 113 runs but lost a crucial one World Test Championship 2021-23 point for their slow over-rate offence.



As per the ICC rules, a WTC point will be docked from the total points accumulated by a team, if they fell short of their required target. For each over bowled after the specified time, a point is fined.



Also, the Indian players were penalised with a 20 per cent match fee for their offence. The charges were imposed by match referee Andy Pycroft. On-field umpires Marais Erasmus and Adrian Holdstock have levelled the charges and the players accepted the offence which is why no formal hearing was conducted.

It is noteworthy that team India has remained guilty of the same offence back in August 2021 during the Nottingham Test against England. Virat Kohli and his men were docked two WTC points for the slow over-rate offence.



The current ICC World Test Championship Cycle will run until 2023. The second edition started with the India tour of England 2021 while it will end in 2023.



Australia had to suffer huge losses during the last WTC cycle as they were penalised with four crucial WTC points from their points table. The Aussies fell just short to enter the final due to the points docked by the ICC.

As of now, in the current ICC World Test Championship 2021-23, India sits at fourth position with a 63.09 win percentage and 53 points in seven matches. World Test Championship 2023 Final likely to be staged at iconic Lord?s Cricket Ground: The test cricket fans could get a treat of watching the ICC World Test Championship 2023 final at the iconic Lord?s Cricket Ground, as the governing body looks to chalk out the final plans very soon. The International Cricket Council (ICC) is likely to announce the venue after their Annual General Meeting (AGM) next month.



Ahead of the World Test Championship 2021 Final between India and New Zealand, Lord?s Cricket Ground was informally earmarked as the venue to stage the contest, but, the covid-19 pandemic threat forced the officials to reconsider their decision.



Following a lot of deliberations, it was finally decided that the ICC World Test Championship 2021 final would be held at the Southampton in Ageas Bowl. Due to its on-site accommodation and logistics facility, Southampton was given a nod ahead of Lord?s.



However, with the United Kingdom, now, moving out of all the covid related restrictions it can be anticipated that the upcoming final of the World Test Championship will be hosted at the Lord?s Cricket Ground.



Notably, current England vs New Zealand test series is being played without the usage of the bio-secure bubbles. All the restrictions have been eased out following a decline in the covid cases.



"I think it is scheduled for Lord's, that was always the intention," ICC chairperson Greg Barclay said on BBC's Test Match Special.



"It's June so that rules out a number of other venues and we've got to get certainty around where it's hosted. We're out of Covid now so subject to arrangements being made and being able to be hosted out of Lord's I think that's the intention."



There is plenty of work that needs to be done before ICC arrives at the decision to stage the world finals at the Lord?s.

<h2>Test Cricket is loss-making for boards: ICC chairperson</h2>



Barclay further indicated that the introduction of the Test championship has brought some relevancy to the traditional format of cricket which otherwise was depleting over time.



Barring a few test series, the red-ball format of cricket is indeed a loss-making investment. India, England and Australia currently <a href="https://www.icccricketschedule.com/icc-test-player-rankings-rank-1-to-10-updated-on-13-march-ashwin-reclaims-top-spot-and-jaiswal-into-top-10-full-icc-mens-test-player-standings/">stand as the top three pillars of the test</a> cricket.



Moreover, the test series between the England-Australia (The Ashes), India-Australia (Border-Gavaskar Trophy) and India-England (Pataudi Trophy) are considered the most profitable series.



"We are fortunate that we have other formats that can help us sustain Test cricket financially because other than one or two series it is effectively loss-making for boards,? said ICC chairperson Greg Barclay.

World Test Championship (WTC) Points Table: What a disastrous home season it has turned out for Pakistan! The Asian side which is known to dominate in home conditions failed to win even a single test match in the entire season on home soil. The lean run of Pakistan's test side continued as they drew the two-match test series against New Zealand in the National Stadium in Karachi.



Kiwi skipper Tim Southee called for a brave declaration late on day four which set the tone for an eventful final day of the 2nd test. Pakistan lost two early wickets on day four itself without adding a single run to the scoreboard and it seemed a total of 319 runs was far-fetched for the hosts.



On the final day of the 2nd Test, the Kiwis once again scalped three crucial wickets to further put a hole in Pakistan's batting unit. Half of Pakistan's batting unit was bundled at a score of 80 runs and it looked dark for the home side to show resistance against the scrutinizing bowling spells.



However, veteran batter Sarfaraz Ahmad showcased his batting brilliance in a time of adversity for Pakistan. Ahmad stitched a strong 100 runs partnership with Saud Shakeel and followed it with another 70-run stand with Salman Agha. In the process, the senior glovesman completed his century and kept Pakistan in the game till the very last moment.



As the game proceeded to its end, the light began fading away and it only meant that New Zealand will have to bowl spinners to complete the remaining overs. Although Sarfaraz eventually lost his wicket while six overs were yet to be bowled, the duo of Nasheem Shah and Abrar Ahmed held their sides and took the game to a draw.

ICC WTC Points Table [Updated] and India?s qualification scenario for the WTC final: South Africa somehow managed to secure a draw against Australia in the third and final Test to keep themselves in position for a spot in the World Test Championship (WTC) final. It should be mentioned that the Proteas were brutally routed in the first two games before they managed to rescue a tie in the Sydney Test. Now, with a 2-0 victory against Bangladesh to wrap up the calendar year 2022, coach Rahul Dravid's team will be aiming to carry that momentum into the Australia series at home. Australia is traveling to India for a 4-match red ball series starting 9th of February 2023.

<h2>Qualification scenario for WTC final</h2>



South Africa, Australia, India, West Indies, and Sri Lanka are still in the race for a spot in the WTC final. The final clash of the ICC World Test Championship will feature the top two teams in the rankings. Before the season is over, each of these has one more series. From February 28 to March 12, South Africa will host their final series against the West Indies at home. The Proteas will have 55.56% points if they win that series 2-0.



South Africa would then have to hope that Australia beat India in their upcoming four-match series and New Zealand beat Sri Lanka. In such a situation, the Proteas team will remain second in the final standings.



<h4>India?s qualification scenario for the WTC final:</h4>



1- If India Win Broder Gavaskar Trophy by 3-1 or 3-0: India will qualify without depending on others.



2- If India Win 2 Tests in Broder Gavaskar Trophy and New Zealand win/draw 1 out of 2 Tests Vs Sri Lanka.



3- India can still qualify if they lose Broder Gavaskar Trophy by 1-2: If West Indies win or draw 1 out of 2 Tests Vs South Africa and New Zealand win 1 Test vs Sri Lanka.
