IPL: Mumbai Indians – a dominant name in franchise cricket and the most successful team in the Indian Premier League (IPL). However, they earned the tag after 2013 when Rohit Sharma was handed the captaincy. The Ambani-owned franchise has taken the franchise cricket by storm and are the owners of a record five IPL titles and 2 Champions League title as well. 

Many greats have played for the franchise and have rated Mumbai Indians as the best team as they feel that the team believes in turning youngsters into superstars by giving them the desired support and backing them.  This has been quite evident as the current mainstays of the Indian team in Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah, Suryakumar Kumar, Ishan Kishan, Hardik Pandya and others have been a product of the franchise.

Mumbai Indians no doubt find out the best out of their players and give them the license to express themselves. The way the franchise owners nurture their players has been spot on. One fine example in this regard has been of their skipper Rohit Sharma. 

IPL team Mumbai Indians have played a great role in the journey of Rohit Sharma from an ordinary player to one of the greatest. After playing as a youngster for two years, the opening batter was handed the leadership of the team in 2013. Not many were impressed by the move, a bluff that time, a masterpiece now. 

Rohit left his impression in the very first season as a captain as he led the team to their first-ever title and after that, he didn’t look back. It was a start of a new era in the IPL as he after that guided team to a record five titles and made them the most successful team in the league. 

Rohit then won the titles in 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2020 and made Mumbai Indians the most dominant team in the IPL. Not only this he also led the team to two championships and league trophies as well. The batter is also the leading run-getter for the franchise as he has played many staggering knocks for them and won them games.

Rohit will captain the team in this year’s IPL as well. After a dismal outing in the last season, where MI ended last on the points table, the opening batter would want to turn the tables around and guide his team to the 6th title.

Not many know how the journey of Rohit Sharma, the skipper started. Anil Kumble, who was the mentor of the team during that time has revealed how the team made the batter as the captain. He said that after they lost 4-5 games in 2013, they asked him to take the role and his response was very positive. 

Speaking on Jio Cinema, he said: “When we lost 4-5 games in IPL 2013, John Wright & I ask Rohit Sharma that are you keen to take up Mumbai captaincy & Rohit replied that he is ready. From then, we never looked back, he has been incredible & won most IPL as captain”.

The next edition of the IPL will kick start from 31st March. Rohit Sharma’s Mumbai Indians will open their campaign against Royal Challengers Bangalore on 2nd April.
