A big but impactful innings from Rohit Sharma was due and this innings featuring a HUNDRED from the dynamic skipper has stamped his true arrival.

Sharma got off the mark with a single on the third ball of the opening over. However, he didn’t take long to shift gears. In the second over, he unleashed his intent with a crisp boundary followed by a towering six, signaling his intent for a big innings. His momentum only grew stronger as he dispatched Saqib Mehmood for two massive sixes before play was briefly halted due to floodlight issues.
The short break did little to disrupt Sharma’s rhythm. As soon as play resumed, he launched a blistering six off Mark Wood’s 150 km/h thunderbolt. Racing to 43 off just 27 deliveries, he capitalized on Adil Rashid’s over, striking back-to-back fours to bring up his half-century in under 30 balls. His fifty, laced with four sixes and two fours, came at an impressive strike rate of 174.
This knock ended his ten-innings drought without a fifty, marking his third-fastest ODI half-century. But Sharma wasn’t done yet. With a blend of aggression and calculated stroke play, he looked determined to push even further.
He cautiously added the next 30 runs off 25 balls, adjusting his approach as the powerplay ended and two wickets tumbled at the other end. Maintaining his composure, he focused on strike rotation, building a steady partnership with Shreyas Iyer.
The white ball monster was in his true colors today and while playing a safe game in his 80s, he suddenly smoked a 145Kmph ball for a ride 80 meters away! His clear-cut mindset and determined intent were with his every stroke. After a long patience, he stepped up and smacked a six the Adil Rashid to reach his 100 in style.
He smashed three more boundaries in the next five balls he faced. He was at 119 when Liam Livingstone got the ball in his hands and in attempt to smack another six, he mishit a loopy and Adil Rashid didn't make any mistake to grab it. 
Before that, England won the toss and asked India to bowl first. Again, a good Partnership at the top helped England win the powerplay battle, with 75 runs in the first 10 overs without losing a wicket. Root and Duckett played in good rhythm, the middle order supported well and England finally breached the 300-run mark.

Even Hardik Pandya wasn't happy with the way Harshit Rana made the overthrow. He, too, gestured to the fast bowler that it was a needless throw and was seen expressing his disappointment.

Team India, under the captaincy of Rohit Sharma, started off the three-match ODI series versus England in a great way, overcoming the visitors in the opening match by a margin of 4 wickets. The heroes of the victory were Shreyas Iyer and Shubman Gill. Iyer played an explosive knock of 59 runs in 36 deliveries while Gill played a magnificent inning of 87 runs in 96 deliveries.
While the latter played a good knock, he missed out on his century by 13 funs and he surely felt the pain of missing out on a well-deserved ton. The 25-year-old got out on the short-pitched delivery of Saqib Mahmood, but it won't be incorrect to say that the pressure on him was created by Hardik Pandya. 
Junior Pandya hit a good six and while it may be a good thing for the team, it turned to be bittersweet for the newly appointed ODI vice-captain Gill as it spoiled his route of bringing up a deserving 7th One-Day International century. 
<h2>How did Hardik spoil the game? </h2>
Young Shubman Gill had settled down at the crease in a perfect manner in Nagpur and while wickets were constantly falling from one end, he maintained his composure and batted in a clean and amazing way. He stitched good partnerships with Axar Patel &amp; Shreyas Iyer and also completed his half-century. 
Slowly and steadily, he came close to completing his hundred. In the 36th over of the match, the 25-year-old was 17 runs away from his hundred and the Men in Blue needed 24 runs to secure the victory. But in that very over, KL Rahul got dismissed and Hardik Pandya walked out to bat at the crease. 
He played the first delivery as a dot ball but hit the very next ball for a maximum. With this six, the Indians needed 18 runs to secure the win and Shubman needed 17 runs to complete his hundred. 
<h2>Gill came under pressure</h2>
If Hardik had taken a single instead of hitting the ball for a six, the Shubman could have brought up his 7th ODI hundred slowly &amp; steadily without feeling the pressure. But, Junior Pandya's six created pressure on the youngster. 
The 25-year-old came on strike in the 37th over and reached the score of 87 runs by hitting a boundary. In a hurry to bring up his ton, he tried to hit the second ball of the over of pacer Saqib Mahmood for a maximum with the help of a pull shot, but he got caught by the fielder on the boundary. 
Following the dismissal of the 25-year-old, Pandya patted his bat and acknowledged his innings but the disappointment on Gill's face was clearly visible. He played a knock of 87 runs in the match with the help of 14 fours.

This is not the first time that Hardik Pandya's six has kept a player away from achieving a milestone. Earlier this happened with Tilak Verma when Hardik had to face a lot of trolling. England’s innings in the first ODI against India had a promising start but faltered midway, ending at a modest total of 248 runs. Asked to bat first, England came out with an aggressive approach, particularly Phil Salt, who looked dangerous from the start. He smashed boundaries at will, setting a brisk tempo.

However, a mix-up in running between the wickets brought his innings to a premature end at 43 off just 26 balls. This wicket triggered a sudden collapse, as England went from a strong 75 for no loss to a shaky 77 for 3 in a matter of moments.  
Captain Jos Buttler then steadied the innings with a well-constructed 52, while Jacob Bethell played an entertaining knock, sweeping and reverse-sweeping his way to 51. Just as it seemed England was rebuilding, both batters fell after crossing their half-centuries, halting the momentum once again. Towards the end, Jofra Archer provided a late flourish with a crucial unbeaten 21, helping England go past 240. However, they would feel they missed out on a bigger score.

For India, the bowlers bounced back strongly after a shaky start. Harshit Rana impressed on debut with three wickets, but it was Ravindra Jadeja who stood out with his brilliant figures of 3 for 26, keeping the English batters in check. India were pleased with their effort, having bowled England out in just 47.4 overs and setting themselves up for a manageable chase.

India began their chase with an unexpected opening pair of Yashasvi Jaiswal and skipper Rohit Sharma, catching many by surprise as Shubman Gill was initially expected to open alongside Rohit. However, Gill was at the crease earlier than expected after both openers departed in quick succession, falling in the fifth and sixth overs with just 19 runs on the board. Rohit Sharma’s struggles in the 2024-25 season continued, with a dismal record across all formats—scoring only 166 runs in 16 innings at an average of just over 10.

Despite the early blows, Shreyas Iyer took charge with an aggressive counterattack, smashing 59 off just 36 balls, while Gill played the anchor role at the other end. After Iyer’s departure, Axar Patel picked up where he left off, contributing a crucial 52 off 47 balls before being undone by a beautiful leg-spinner from Adil Rashid.
The real match-winner, however, was Shubman Gill, whose outstanding 87 firmly put India in control. A late flurry of wickets caused some jitters, briefly delaying the inevitable, but Ravindra Jadeja and Hardik Pandya held their nerve to see India over the line. Sakib Mahmood and Adil Rashid picked up two wickets each, while Jofra Archer and Jacob Bethell chipped in with one apiece. In the end, India emerged victorious, sealing the first ODI with a four-wicket win.

IPL is starting soon and there is bad news coming from Chennai Super Kings (CSK) after his all-rounder player Rachin Ravindra of New Zealand suffered a nasty injury to his face in Lahore.
The match was at Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore on Saturday February 8.
